Definitive

This book is amazing. When I was an undergraduate, while at the library I would take study breaks by roaming the vast aisles of books at the M.D. Anderson Library. I would occasionally pick books off the shelf and begin reading them to escape from my studies - putting my mind at ease. This was one of the few random books I found worth checking out and indugently reading throuugh.
I am no gearhead and may never be - the best I have done so far is changing the alternator and the oil - but Heisler's book seems written for both the engineer and the layman. You need not read ever word to grasp the underlying principals of automotive mechanics in this book, and you need not have rigorous training in thermal physics to understand the concepts. If you ever once believed cars to be a mysterious, voodoo like presence, then fear no more. For Heisler has assembled and summed up the integral parts of the modern auto in this amazing book.
Although written over ten years ago, I can say by looking at my car and my friends' and relatives' cars that not too much has changed. If you want to know more about cars because you think your mechanic may be ripping you off: buy this book.
