Good book for civil engineering students

This book is very useful for every students who take civil engineering as their major. It give you all the explanation about concrete destruction because of nature and human error. And tells you how to repair it and to maintain it so it won't damaged more that it used to be. I find this book very helpful for my thesis. Every civil engineering students and other major that related to it has to own this book.

Maggie Parke is completing her doctoral degree at the National Institute for Excellence in the Creative Industries at Bangor University, Wales. She has published in the Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds and is the head of development for Elfin Productions. Natalie Wilson pens one of the only academic blogs analyzing Twilight and its cultural impact. She teaches at Cal State San Marcos in the Department of Literature and Writing and in the women's studies program.

Not my cup of tea, loved it anyway

Eight weeks prior to this review, one of my fellow reference librarians received a request via our "Research Consultation Program" (anyone can request an appointment with a librarian for assistance in research). The patron stated they needed "scholarly articles about the Twilight movies and books." We both rolled our eyes and chuckled to each other (in private) then proceeded, in good faith, to help our hapless undergraduate. It's not that topics in popular culture don't receive scholarly treatment, but given that Stephenie Meyer's series was written so recently, 2005 to 2008, and the film versions didn't start until 2008 and won't be complete until late 2012, we weren't confident we'd find much. To our surprise, we did find a couple of critical analyses, mostly in the form of reviews. Fast forward to today.

Maggie Parke and Natalie Wilson have done a fine job of filling the void in scholarly and critical analysis of many things Twilight. The essays are divided into three sections. The first covers the pop cultural aspects surrounding Twilight. Reading the five essays herein reminded me of my earlier days, reviewing a fanzine called "The Picardian" which attempted to cover, and deconstruct, all things Jean Luc Picard (see Star Trek: The Next Generation).

The thrust of the second five essays falls under traditional literary criticism and analysis. Comparisons with Wuthering Heights and modern teen fiction are well written and, dare I say it? INTERESTING!

The final five essays focus on the social and anthropological aspects of the Twilight universe. Discussions of "heteronormative patriarchy" stand along side musing about the "Noble Savage" and "Genesis, Gender, and Gynocide."

This book should be a no brainer purchase for public libraries, and academic libraries that can back down from snobbery ("But, but, but, it's just about TWILIGHT, dang it!") could also benefit from our experience that there will be a demand for this book (and I know that anecdote is not evidence).

Parents could consider purchasing this for their Fans of Twilight offspring. Think of this work as a stealthy introduction to a younger generation about the joys of quality critical analysis, deconstruction, and the analysis of pop culture.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars because, despite NOT being a fan of the Twilight books or movies, I loved this collection.

The story seemed to be strongly autobiographical, but many of the anecdotes were ones I heard in Sydney growing up in the fifties, and the voices I found inauthentic. For example, no young boys that i have ever known would talk to one another in long sentences with quite complicated vocabulary one minute, and in just-off demotic the next and the interactions with the men by the river were not convincing. The setting was very well conveyed, though.

Thought provoking and challenging

An excellent read depicting life growing up in rural Grenada. It is written in dialect - both the narration and the dialogue which can be challenging to read at times for a non Grenadian, but it is readable. There is a glossary of local terms in the back which helps with unusual words. It is an eye opener for those of us from the West, who look upon Grenada as an idyllic paradise. We learn about the people and the hardships and struggles endured in every day life. Well worth the read if you are looking for a read which is different, thought-provoking and challenging.

What an unforgetable journey!

When I turned the last page, I wanted to meet her, to hear her voice, and experience her strength. The story rings so true, the details so vivid, I know Lee is out there somewhere. When you read this book, you will have the same experience too.

A very touching journey.

Well worth the read.... the author truly described the hardship and abuse (physical & mental) some children went through by the hands of their caregivers even their own family. It was heart wrenching go through the journey of the young life of the author with her as she told the story. I'm so thankful I have not been through what she has described. I truly respect this young woman for the strong and graceful person she is today. Kudos to a true nubian princess.

Loved this book! I wasn't doubting anything about it when I heard who wrote it.
I loved Beat and Pea-the craziness that is their relationship is just.....WOW!!
It has some very dark situations, but it also has some crazy humor! Pea bouncing her stress ball off Beat's face?!? Priceless!
I loved the way that the author built these characters up-I loved the way she made them fall for each other. It wasn't insta-love, but it was crazy hot! Pea was on a mission and Beat was determined to make it fail.
I love this author and will continue to read as long as she continues to write!

Dark, Suspense, Powerful ~ A Must Read

What a roller coaster ride. Every character was so well developed, and the story was like none that I have ever read before.

"I love her like a slave, I kneel in front of her like a subject, I crawl back to her at night like a drunk, and I worship her like a believer".

Nate is by far one of my favorites. His love for Prescott was to his core. And Prescott, she was strong, straight forward in her quest for obtaining the pieces of her soul that were taken. Love her.

I would like to end with this; read this story. You will fall hard for these two.

Thank you Leigh for giving us readers another story for more then 5 Stars.

Her Peace and His Storm

I don't know that there are words to describe this book but I will try. It was most definitely a dark, twisted and suspensful ride. Prescott is nothing like you would expect. On the outside she's just another spoiled little princess who has had everything handed to her. On the inside, she is broken by her past, betrayed by those she trusted most, and a f-ing warrior! She fought back, took control and survived. Nate is thought of as many things by many people. A murderer, a servant, a nobody, a thug...all behind a beautiful face. It doesn't take long to figure out that Nate truly is a good person. While he may be an ex-con and a murderer, he is fair. He tries his hardest to stay away from Pea and she tries her hardest to seduce Beat. Both fighting the only way they know how to survive the life that has been cast upon them. Through it all they find the one thing they have always needed. Love for each other. So yes, this story is dark and twisted. You will meet some of the most awful men you can imagine. It is suspensful. Just when you think you have it figured out, you find you had no clue to begin with. It is beautiful. Two people who have fought alone their whole lives finally find that missing piece. He is her peace and she is his storm.

An excellent start to a Bizarre Adventure

I'm probably one of the few people not introduced to Jojo via Stardust Crusaders, and coming into Phantom Blood cold is probably for the best, as I hear by the time JoJo's third iteration rolls around thing are rather a bit different.

What's here though, in volume 1 of Jojo is the start of something really interesting, albeit not quite to the meat and potatoes of the matter. In fact it ends at a really awkward place, it really should have gone one chapter (or two) more. But overall it does a great job at setting the tone this series is going to take.

Artistically the book is really interesting. Taking a page right out of Fist of the Northstar, where men are giant slabs of meat. And the violence always comes with buckets. The art is a bit rough, as it so often is for such a long running series that started in the late 80s. But that rawness is part of its charm. To see an artist evolve over decades will be this series's greatest treat.

As for the rating... I'd have given it 5 stars if the Amazon Kindle version wasn't plagued with such image compression on its color pages. Major appearances of pixilated 'crush' can be seen everywhere. I don't know if this unique to Amazon's version, and if it looks better on ComiXology or directly from Viz. Or if Viz just didn't care when putting out their digital copy files. But it sure is unnecessarily ugly. Which is a terrible shame. The one thing a mostly black and white graphic novel should have is uncompressed art.

A beautiful hard cover volume with color panels throughout.

Phantom Blood's art shows its age, but it's the start to an amazing series. Absolutely buy this if you are a manga fan, as Jojo is the origin of many popular manga trends seen today. The quality of this printing is worth the extra few dollars over the Kindle edition, and the quality of the series is worth owning both Kindle and print if you are a collector.

The Pure Embodiment of Excellence! A Must Buy!

Book Quality - First off the quality of this book is bar none there is so much detail and nuances in every corner of this book there is dozens of beautiful color pages throughout this manga which is not common for most releases, its simply amazing. The printing and artwork is top notch I found myself many times admiring the art and taking it in, I collect manga and this goes down to one of my favorites just by its superb quality.

Story - This manga has some of the best writing in any genre I've witness and some of the best story arcs, I have been blown away by it many times it never disappoints. The story follows the many generations of the Joestar lineage there is currently 8 parts and 8 generations so this story spans over many centuries which is uncommon in most books it's what truly makes it so unique and keeps it fresh and inviting for every installment!

I RECOMMEND THIS SERIES 100%!!!!! BUY IT SO THE PRINTING WILL CONTINUE FOR ALL PARTS, NOW THAT WOULD BE BIZARRE!! :D
