The aircraft was not well liked by air crews, however, due to its large size, heavy weight, and lateral instability. During the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, 45 Helldivers ran out of fuel and were lost before they could return to their carriers. More modifications ensued and the more powerful SB2C-3 made its appearance, equipped with the R-2600-20 Twin Cyclone engine and a Curtiss four-blade propeller, in 1944. Helldivers helped sink the battleship Musashi in October 1944 and, in April 1945, sent the battleship Yamato to the bottom of the ocean the two heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever built. 194 photos, many in color, 80 pages.

Stephen Quiller loves to teach, and I love to learn from artists like him. I not only like his work; I respect his ability and willingness to convey what he has learned to me, an amateur. When I evaluate an exhibition, it is very hard to keep his work out of the top five. This book takes me where I want to go!

Great stuff for the watermedia painter, don't miss it!

I have been waiting for this book for over a year. I heard about it at Stephen Quiller's Summer workshop in Creede, Colorado, June 2007. I have been painting watercolors for a lot of years and have studied, read, drawn, and painted fairly consistently through those years. I have concluded that all aspects of doing art are important to learn--drawing, composition, materials, equipment, and so on. But, once you have gained some competence in these areas, it all comes down to color. Now I have learned about color too, but during the latter part of those years, Quiller's books "Color Choices" and "Painter's Guide to Color" really helped me achieve a quantum leap forward in my use and understanding of color.

Stephen Quiller is an expert and master at painting with watermedia, all kinds, and at mixed watermedia, plein air painting, and color. And these subjects are covered in this book. But I always had a wish, and that was that he would explain his compositional approach. How does he put together his paintings onsite and elsewhere? And here it is. And what a treasure it is!

What I also appreciate is that this book was written by an accomplished and dedicated teacher, who genuinely desires to pass on those valuable lessons he has learned to us struggling artists. And it is written well. I have followed his work and writing for a number of years, and he just keeps getting better. Stephen Quiller is the real thing. He works hard at his art. He knows what he is talking about, big time. His helper at his gallery in Creede (matter, framer, researcher, manager, etc.) Chere Waters told me, during a conversation at the gallery, that every day he is at home and can, Quiller is out painting. That's what it takes, folks. I tell my students, "You want to get good, do it everyday!"

About the Author
Jean Giono (1895–1970) was born and lived most of his life� in the town of Manosque, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Largely self-educated, he started working as a bank clerk at the age of sixteen and reported for military service when World War I broke out. He fought in the battle of Verdun and was one of the few members of his company to survive. After the war, he returned� to his job and family in Manosque and became a vocal, lifelong pacifist. After the success of Hill, which won the Prix Brentano, he left the bank and began to publish prolifically. During World War II Giono’s outspoken pacifism led some to accuse him unjustly of collaboration with the Nazis; after France’s liberation in 1944, he was imprisoned and held without charges. Despite being blacklisted after his release, Giono continued writing and was elected to the Acad�mie Goncourt in 1954.

Paul Eprile is a longtime publisher (Between the Lines, Toronto), as well as a poet and translator. He is currently at work on the translation of Jean Giono’s novel Melville (forthcoming from NYRB) and lives on the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario, Canada.

This novel is full of exquisite imagery, moving freely between the impressionistic, the naturalistic, and the human. The translation is beautiful. The effect of the story and the skill of the prose left me in a perfect poetic pause.

Just the right book at just the right time.

With Coelho's works, I always stumble on the right work at the right time - this book was no exception.

It's not a long read, and it's a bit disjointed (there is work here from a number of different authors) but it is all relevant.

Quick read - encourage you to buy and read this if you are looking for the how-to's in life!

Insights into Coelho

Coelho's writing voice can vary, so I never quite know what to expect with his books (although rarely disappointed). The Book of Manuals is a bit like having a conversation with the author, in an almost 'reading his journal' way. I enjoyed sharing his insights, although I'm not sure everyone will, as it is quite different from his usual writing style.

Go West, young Man. Or, "Westward, Ho"

So 18-year old Clay comes home to Los Angeles from college in woodsy New Hampshire for Christmas Break and very rapidly resumes LA cruising altitude: partying, booze, getting a tan, partying, seeing all the hot bands making the rounds at clubs-of-the-moment like the Roxy or The Edge, more partying, checking out movies in Westwood blitzed out of his mind, cruising around LA, watching bootleg Mexican snuff porn (featuring underage victims & chainsaws and wire hangers),

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Bret Easton Ellis's "Less than Zero" is a fine little primer on how the Rich & Famous live and die in LA, with Clay as our Virgil in this descent into a 1980's Dante's Inferno peopled by the Lithium-addled (but thin, baby, thin! and tan! and loaded! filthy stinking rich, Maserati country baby!)Walking Dead. Tunes, by the way, courtesy of Duran Duran and Psychedelic Furrs.

He goes to lots of parties: celebrity parties, pre-movie deal parties at Spago with his movie producer Dad and his estranged mother, etc. He does a lot of good drugs. He does a lot of bad drugs. He drives around in his Mercedes. At times he practically shoves whole boxes of Kleenex up his brutalized, quivering snout to calk up the torrent of blood & snot, the collateral damage of his cocaine habit. He scopes out corpses in alleys.

"Less than Zero" proves you really can't go Home again, particularly if Home really wasn't much of a place to begin with. And you know, the thing is, with all the bling, the bank, the field trips to Spago & Chasen's, the road trips on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Porsche, holing up at the beachhouse at Monterey---with all that, if your life is so featureless there are no real markers or mileposts, it's pretty hard to get There from Here---or figure out how Here relates to anything at all.

As the billboard says: "Disappear Here."

Think of "Less than Zero"---the text, our guidebook into this Wonderland of banality, boredom, and high-octane depravity---as a kind of camera obscura, its image fused, heightened, now sharpened, now distorted, with light, speed, and time.

When Bret Easton Ellis released "Lunar Park", a kind of transgressive lament for his estranged father, critics howled that Ellis was playing dilettante, dipping his toes into the weedy moat of Horror reserved for Stephen King & Dean Koontz.

Really? Ellis hasn't ever written Horror? Even leaving "American Psycho" out of this, read "Less than Zero" and answer that question for yourself: Ellis's palmy, leafy, luxuriant LA is less American Dream than Nightmare, a twilight-realm of hardbodies and supercars where the daytime shadows flit across the flickering water-bottoms of swimming pools, and monsters move in the palm groves.

With that in mind, "Less than Zero" revelatory as a scalpel, is also as simple as an elementary school essay: bottom line, it's all about what Clay does on his Christmas vacation.

No, really.

So it's a little spyglass into the world of Clay & his old school buddies and their parties and sushi lunches and aimless high-end meanderings through the LA jungle. And the Kids are really, really, really *not* aliright.

For instance: Daniel sliced his hand up, has wires poking up through his raw phalanges, takes way too much lithium and is uncomfortably numb.

Julian is inaccessible, gomezing around his haunts in LA in a black porsche with tinted windows and stalked by wild-eyed panic; Blair, Clay's former girlfriend, who wants to know what love is---you know? alana & Kim, her friends, who evidently have an abortion competition going; muriel, who's anorexic and likes shoving shiny pointy things into her blood vessels, and Rip the drug dealer, who's *way* upbeat.

Clay gets driven around in the luxury cars his friends own, or rather, the cars their parents bought them: Ferraris, Porsches, BMWs. He goes to Fatburger; he checks out flicks half-bombed at Westwood, the Beverly Center, high in the Hollywood Hills, he worries about werewolves. about earthquakes. about a billboard that says, ominously & nonchalantly, "Disappear Here".

There are a few writers I'm actively, wrenchingly jealous of: Cormac McCarthy is one of them, Ellis is another. Ellis's peculiar talent is to infuse this bleak landscape with a kind of narcotic readability, while simultaneously excising his own voice, the presence of the author, entirely from the pages.

Fitting enough for this nasty little piece of grue & High Society, a world that excises its creatures as effectively as the High Sonorran Wind howling over the desert floor erases the hardtable playa.

I don't get the love

I must be missing something here, I don't get the adulation for this book. It's just rather, pointless. Maybe that's the point? Perhaps it was shocking at a time and perhaps that time has just passed. I don't know. There's such minimal description about anything I found it hard to even care what was happening. There's sex...kinda. There's drugs...mentioned in passing. "I did a line of coke" isn't scandalous, it's barely a sentence. I guess I was expecting more since so many were so vocally against the movie back in the day in that it was "nothing like the book." I thought cool, I want to read this book if the movie supposedly softened the novel. Having finished it, I really don't understand that argument in the slightest.

Only part I enjoyed were all the references to the music. Happened to be in an restaurant at one point reading it and all they were playing were 80's songs, quite ideal.

Holds a mirror to the decedant world of eightes excess and the disillusionment of youth

Less than Zero has several things going for it: It's composed in the same "broken narrative", simplistically-written style as American Psycho; it's relatively short, and could be read in one sitting; it touches on themes, but doesn't explore any of them, choosing instead to present the bare reality of situations...forcing the reader to form his or her own interpretation(s). Where is it lacking? If anything, it emphasis the moral degradation, the apathy, and the drug culture a little too heavily, almost to the point of being surreal...especially considering that most of the main characters are eighteen years old. The book also didn't really start to pull together for me until the last fifty pages or so. But these are all minor, easily overlooked points. I think this work begs to be read allegorically; at heart, it really is the classic "coming of age tale," updated for the modern era. Throughout the book the protagonist (Clay) nostalgically reminisces about his childhood, which juxtaposes the sometimes horrible, sometimes mundane, and sometimes unbelievable events unfolding before him on his four-week break from college. At points he has trouble reconciling memories of his youth with the reality of what's happening to him - something we've all experienced - and the transition from adolescence to adulthood remains awkward and unnerving even to people who are tanned, bleach-blonde, consume coke like candy, drive Ferraris and Porches, have sex with everyone, wear sunglasses, and have, at a tender age, become numb, self-medicated, hollowed-out shells. Los Angeles is depicted as a carnivorous, anything-gos playground; with maximum potential for fulfilling even the most base and malignant desires - as long as your rich and privileged, and your father produces or directs movies. Beyond the drugs, sex, parties, cars, and restaurants, the city itself seems to be the addiction for many of the characters, and in the end, seems to completely consume more than one of Clay's friends whole. Is Los Angeles really like that? I don't know, because I've never visited the city myself with unlimited funds in my wallet and privilege on my plate like the kids in this book...but I've always considered it to be the city of broken dreams, and I think that that (at least) is something me and Mr. Ellis agree on.

*I had a hard time deciding whether to give this 3 or 4 stars - I think 3 1/2 stars would be most appropriate.
