PreSchool-Grade 1-While playing house, Erik is prompted by a questioning friend to ask his mother if he has a daddy. She tells him that he had a daddy in the beginning but that he left. She further explains that some parents get married and take care of their children together, but that she and Erik's father never married because they were so young. Erik's mother emphasizes how much she wanted him and how excited his daddy was when he was born. The story ends with the boy's mother reminding him of the important role his uncle and grandfather play in his life. The text is written in a positive and nurturing manner, and lets children know that there are many different types of family situations. An informative section for single parents on ways they can deal with this issue follows the story. The illustrations are somewhat stiff and amateurish, but do an adequate job of visualizing the text for young children. This book should have a place in libraries, counselors' offices, and social workers' collections.

When Erik is taunted by his friend about not having a father, he goes home and confronts his mother: "Where's my daddy?" She answers his difficult question and others by explaining that there are different kinds of daddies, and Erik's was too young to take on the responsibilities of marriage. She reassures him that she will always be there for him and urges him to spend time with his uncle and grandpa who love him. Following the story is a section devoted to single parents, which, although seemingly geared toward less-experienced single parents, provides good tips for any single parent handling similar questions and emphasizes the importance of being honest and positive. The book will be useful in presenting the concept of single-parent families to a wide audience. Helen Rosenberg

my daughters favorite

If you are a single mom or dad raising your child alone this book will definitely be helpful for both of you.
It is my daughters favourite book for bed time reading. Written in such a simple manner it was easy for me to simultaniously translate and make it interesting in my language. It gave her a feeling that she is not the only kid living alone with mommy and gave her courage to ask more detailed questions while listening.
The sections for adults helped me more then all the other books written exclusively for single moms and dads.
If you are not certain, buy the book and will not regret it.

Not for Single Mothers by Choice

This book is good for some situations, but it is not appropriate for planned single parent families, i.e. through donor insemination or adoption. More specifically, it is designed for talking about why the man who fathered you is not here, not for talking about why I chose to start a family with you without a father.

this is a pretty good book dealing with the subject of a child not having a dad in his life. The only thing I really didn't like is that the story starts out with the child being teased about not having a dad, and I wouldn't like to put that idea into a child's mind if it had not happened yet. But overall, a helpful book to open the discussion.

Unusually clear Jesuit priest's introduction to Aquinas

English Jesuit Father Frederick Copleston, immortalized as author of the monumental "History of Philosophy" still found in many large bookstores today, provides the best short introduction to St. Thomas Aquinas you will ever find. This Penguin Classics paperback features a brief biography of Copleston on the first page followed by his brilliant text. The great thing about Copleston is that he knows so much philosophy that he puts Aquinas in perspective like no other author. Rather than giving you a tunnel vision or highly specialized view of the Angelic Doctor, he gives you an Aquinas who is still relevant to philosophy today. I've perused a lot of different books on Aquinas, many of which are intimidating in their immersion in arcane scholastic terminology. Copleston writes in a clear and precise language that any introductory student will understand. I highly recommend this book. It's the best short introduction to Aquinas that I've ever seen.

Very Informative

With no real schooling in our aptitude for philosophy, I couldn't follow Aquinas, although I've always been very interested in his ideas, especially his rational proofs of the existence of God. Fr. Copleston's book was immensely helpful. His writing style is clear and elegant. He avoids technical philosophical jargon whenever possible and illustrates difficult concepts with everyday, real life examples. He also does a thorough job of comparing and contrasting Aquinas and his major influence, Aristotle. On occasion Copleston remarks on how Aquinas differs from Kant and other more contemporary thinkers; I wish there had been a little more of that as well, but I imagine his multi-volume History of Philosophy covers all that in detail. I think this book is a fantastic place to start for anyone interested in Aquinas and Middle Ages philosophy in general.

Father Copleston's book is an excellent introduction to the philosophy of St. Thomas. A man of great intellectual depth, Copleston's lucid style makes Aquinas good reading for both academic study and personal philosophical/spiritual enjoyment.

Read Philosophy, Do Not Fear It

I want to say from the beginning that one does not need to agree with a philosophy to appreciate it. Obviously most of the critics and some of the supporters have never read this work. One need not approve of communism to give the Communist Manifesto a high rating but it is certainly a must read.

Ayn Rand's philosophy is known as objectivism. It is essentially having a objective reason and purpose for every action you commit.

Atlas Shrugged is one of two major novels that outlines her entire philosophy while trying to show how it would be applied. That is why this book deserves a 5 star rating. Any philosopher can give generic ideas with no application. Rand puts it all on the line to show exactly how she means her philosophy to be interpreted.

The student of philosophy will be able to understand her philosophy quite clearly after reading this. If you agree with her philosophy you should encourage others to read this book. If this book is so clearly wrong then you should encourage others to read it so they will see how clearly wrong it is. Those that want it burned or object to others reading it know that she offers some very strong arguments for a position they clearly do not want to be true.

This book takes place probably around the 1950s. It is centered around the industrial sector of the U.S., the only government that has not become a People's State. The main character in this book is Dagny Taggart. She is a no-nonsense VP of Operations for the largest railroad in the world. She is intelligent and is solely driven to keeping her RR as the best.

The times are dim and getting dimmer. In the beginning the country is in a recession of sorts and it is up to Taggart and others like her to save the country. There are two problems that are preventing her from doing this. One, the government seeks more and more control when it should be stepping away. Second, the men of industry are disappearing one by one just when they are critically needed. No one knows where they go off to.

In the sense of a novel this is a good one. It is suspenseful and intriguing. Everyone can identify with the characters in this book. Most of the antagonists have been left rather shallow. That is on purpose. They are supposed to represent certain elements of society. This book can get dry at times. One man has a 60 page speech that can seem a little preachy at times but is wholly necessary within the context of the novel.

Ayn Rand is perhaps the best known and widest read philosopher of the 20th century. If you have any interest in philosophy or economics then this is a must read. Don't fear her teachings. An open mind is a dangerous thing to some people.

The most important thing to remember is not to take everything you read here as dogma. Think for yourself and apply whatever ideas make sense to you and ignore that which you don't like. Think for yourself. I think Rand would object to anyone blindly following her philosophy without actually believing in it. No one says you can't be charitable to others. Just make sure you do it of your own volition and not because it is expected of you or because you feel guilty.

A nice surprise

I have read Atlas Shrugged many times and I was pleasantly surprised by this cliffs notes summary and analysis of the book. It includes a short biography of Ayn Rand while the bulk of the book is spent on a detailed going over of Ayn Rand's plot, theme, and characters. It is fascinating to read an intelligent analysis of these characters. This is in-depth analysis and covers characters all the way from Hank Reardon to Gwen Ives. The gems of the book are the two critical essays; The Role of the Mind in Human Life and the Role of the Common Man in Atlas Shrugged: the Eddie Willers Story. There is even a little Atlas Shrugged quiz at the end...What is the theme of Atlas Shrugged? This book is written by an Objectivist author and is definately worth buying.

A Great Supplement

If the value of CliffsNotes was only to help readers discover with clarity what a particular author meant to convey in their novels, this book on _Atlas Shrugged_ would be trash. The reason is that Ayn Rand, more than any other author, wrote perfectly lucid novels about which no clarification is needed.
However, these books (of which I've only read a few) do offer another value that makes this one especially, not trash, but a book to be treasured. What they offer is this: the CliffsNotes books condense often-lengthy, important works of art so that they can be grasped--and remembered--with ease. And, as _Atlas Shrugged_ comprises some thousand plus pages with enough action and subplots to rival any novel by Hugo or Dumas, this value can perhaps never be more evident than with this new addition to the CliffsNotes series by Andrew Bernstein.
Cognizant of the task at hand, Dr. Bernstein condenses the entire book in a solid nine pages. From there, he lays down who the characters in the book are--as well as their relation to one another. And, after that, the reader is given a host of "critical commentaries" on each of the books thirty chapters which summarize what happened, pose questions to the reader that will be answered later, and reveal a number of instances where Miss Rand's overall theme can be seen.
Any person who is reading _Atlas_ for the first or second time ought to find these commentaries very helpful in understanding and appreciating the book. Unfortunately, as someone who has read the novel many times, I had to read many of the author's observations with a bitter-sweet sense of joy. ("Bitter" because I wish such a book was around when I first started reading Rand's novels and "sweet" because one finally is.)
Complete, undiluted happiness did not have to wait long however. Immediately after the "critical commentaries" is a section on the most important characters giving a detailed analysis of each. Then, at the end of the book, are two magnificent essays--one on the overall theme of _Atlas Shrugged_ and another on Miss Rand's portrayal of the common man which tells why the book's main "common man" (Eddie Willers) has an unresolved fate at the end. These two essays were a nice finishing touch for the book, making even a self-titled "veteran" reader like myself glad to have read it.
Taken all together, from the brief biography of Miss Rand at the beginning to the quizzes and projects to stimulate learning at the end, this book proves that Dr. Bernstein was the right man to pick for the job. And so, my gratitude goes out to the author and this last word of advice goes out to you, the person reading the words I've written here: "get this book whether you are reading _Atlas_ for the first time or not--as a supplement to Miss Rand's magnum opus there's nothing better on the market."

Learn about India, Kriya Yoga, and Christianity from this wonderful author and significant religious figure of tthe 20th century

Autobiography of a Yogi is a book that was on my wish list for a long time. I saw the book referenced by another author. Several months back, I watched an old interview with George Harrison. The dullard MTV reporter made a comment about Elvis Presley not being a spiritual seeker, to which George Harrison stepped in to defend Elvis. A little bit of investigation led me to the fact that Autobiography of a Yogi was one of Elvis’s favorite books. This prodded me into buying the kindle version of this book.
There are 2 groups I would not recommend read Autobiography of a Yogi. The first are religious fundamentalists of any religion. You already know everything you need to know about God. Some of you see the devil in anyone who doesn’t believe what you do, you see the devil in everything but your own hatred for the other, whether the other is another religion, another viewpoint, another tribe who stand in the way of you taking what you want from them, including their land and their right to a living.
The other group I would recommend not reading Autobiography of a Yogi are the secular-materialist progressives, especially the Hollywood and news media pundit variety. You already know everything. You know that religious people are idiots, religious miracles are fairy tales, you know your mentality is superior, and anyone who doesn’t agree with you is mean-spirited, even though the filth that comes out of your mouth is more mean-spirited than any of the groups you criticize. Don’t read this book. You don’t want to learn anything, you already know it all.
However, if you are a seeker of God, or a person interested in world religions, or mysticism, you SHOULD read this book. I am convinced after reading this book, that Yogananda was one of the great religious figures of the 20th century. He was a man on a mission, chosen by his guru to come to the west, introduce Kriya Yoga here, and to show the similarities between his religion and Christianity. The reality is that most religious mysticism is similar from one religion to another. But of course, the ones who study the mystical aspects of religion are the few. What is apparent reading this book, is that Yogananda knew and understood the Bible better than most Christians.. His work displays a love and admiration for Jesus Christ, which is unusual since in our own country, Jesus is blamed for the crimes that were committed in his name. The fact is many in the public eye hate Jesus and his teachings, and take every opportunity to spew their hatred and ill mental health towards his name. One wonders what the world would be like if more westerners (especially Americans) were similar to Yogananda, if we Americans were as familiar with the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita and other religious books from various traditions as we are with the Bible. I personally think the world would be a better place.
Autobiography of a Yogi presents many fantastic stories and miracles that require a leap of faith. However, if you are a Christian, you have already made that leap. Why would the miracles be limited only to Christian saints? I have no difficulty believing what Yogananda says he has witnessed. Lastly, Autobiography of a Yogi is a long book, but it is engaging and well worth reading. I would love to give it more than 5 stars. Anyone who would like to understand India better should read this book. Long it may be, but what a joy to read. Thank you Yogananda for this book and for your life and work.

I have long enjoyed and learned from reading the great Indian spiritual writers

As an instructor of world religions, I have long enjoyed and learned from reading the great Indian spiritual writers, whether their commentaries on Vedic literature or their own autobiographies. Paramahansa Yogananda's autobiography is a splendid work guaranteed to hold the interested reader in rapt attention.

One feature of this work that I especially appreciate is its humor. The yogi is self-effacing and wry, and he approaches profoundly spiritual and meaningful subjects and experiences with a lightness of heart that keeps his narrative on the earthly plane even while inspiring the reader to transcend mundane realities. The text presents the timeless teachings of ancient India in a way that is accessible and attractive to a modern Western reader.

Paramahansa Yogananda was truly an enlightened soul who sought guidance from truth-tellers, whether his own mentors or the divine. In his commentary on the New Testament, he wrote that the teachings of Jesus Christ "reveal the perfect unity that exists among the revelations of the Christian Bible, the Bhagavad Gita of India, and all other time-tested true scriptures." In his trademark gentle way, Paramahansa Yogananda reverenced the teachings of all who spoke truth and taught love.

Through this autobiography, we learn not only about the life and teaching of Paramahansa Yogananda but also of yogis and others who directly mentored or otherwise inspired him -- Nagendra Nath Bhaduri ("The Levitating Saint"), J.C. Bose, Ram Gopal Muzumdar ("The Sleepless Saint"), Babaji (The "Yogi-Christ of Modern India"), Therese Neumann ("The Catholic Stigmatist") and many others. And through the many characters introduced to us in these pages, we learn the wisdom of the Indian ages.

This book (and other worthy titles) comes from the Self-Realization Fellowship, which the author founded in 1920s. This particular edition is the one to buy, because it includes the author's additions to the original 1946 edition and other elements not in the first edition.

This book is to my spirit what a cool swim is on a hot summer day. I revel in its refreshment and revivification.

I realized that Paramahansa Yogananda had made perfect sense of life

I believe this is the most important book ever written by a human being. The first time I tried to read it, I literally could not, because I couldn't believe that the miracles were real; they seemed so unscientific to me. So, I stopped reading it. Then, I realized that I was not practicing multi-cultural respect by believing that Paramahansa Yogananda was writing things that could not be true, so I decided that he was somehow writing "his" truth, and that "his" truth was somehow in-the-direction of THE Truth, and I began to read it once again.

Before I could finish the book, I realized that Paramahansa Yogananda had made perfect sense of life, the universe, the teachings and miracles of Christ, and that now life could make sense for me and others in new, beautiful, and more loving ways.

If everyone in the world only read one book, I hope it would be this one!

Foster Provost is Professor and NEC Faculty Fellow at the NYU Stern School of Business where he teaches in the MBA, Business Analytics, and Data Science programs. The perfect balance

When trying to learn about a new field, one of the most common difficulties is to find books (and other materials) that have the right "depth". All too often one ends up with either a friendly but largely useless book that oversimplifies or a heavy academic tome that, though authoritative and comprehensive, is condemned to sit gathering dust in one's shelves. "Data Science for Business" gets it just right.

What I mean might become clearer if I point out what this book is *not*:

- It is *not* a computer science textbook with a focus on theoretical derivations and algorithms.

- It is *not* a "cookbook" that provides "step-by-step" guidance with little to no explanation of what one is doing.

- It is *not* your standard "management" title on the cool tech du jour available at airport stands and meant to be read in one sitting (buzzwords, hype and overly enthusiastic statements making up for the dearth of actual content).

Instead, it is close to being the perfect guide for the intelligent reader who -- regardless of whether s/he has a tech background -- has a sincere desire to learn how the tools and principles of data science can be used to extract meaningful information from huge datasets. Highly recommended.

Let Me Guess ...

At it's core, Data science is the elimination of guess, intuition,hunch and decisions backed by Data .

Data Science is ranked the Sexiest Job Of 21st Century by Harvard Business Review. Today there is a tremendous demand for everything "Data Science", Companies need "Data scientists", IT resources are refocusing themselves to be the "Data scientists". Contrary to popular beliefs that Marketing benefits a lot from data science, companies are finding benefits across the spectrum of their operations . Example : A leading Trucking company used Data mining skill to predict which part of the truck is going to break next instead of replacing it at specific intervals, a Leading insurer predicted those who will complete their antibiotic course based on their home ownership history. If this type of stories and scope interests you, read the book "Big Data: A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live, Work, and Think".

I am an aspiring "Data Scientist" and so this review will have a slight tilt from a "Data Scientist" perspective over the business user.

WHAT THIS BOOK IS ?
This book is very well written ,but not for the faint heart. It is a text book and authors have taken lot of care so general audience can also benefit from it, and also not to dilute it's textbook value. To get the full benefit of the book, read about 50 pages ( Do not flip pages), never more than 10 -15 pages per session. The book is intense so you will need to take a break in between or will lose the thread. Once you are finished with fifteen pages, go to the first page and read , highlight the important areas and then go to the next page. So plan to read this book in a span of 2 -3 months. I know it is slow but if you want to understand the inner workings of "Data science", there is not much other option. Alternative is to flip across several superficial articles that is a staple diet of every blog and magazines.

WHAT THIS BOOK WILL DELIVER ?
When you are finished with the book, you should have a fairly good understanding of data science, For example, what type of analysis that needs to be done to identify
A. Will the Customer switch loyalty ? ( Yes / No )
B. What type of customers will cancel my subscription ? ( Ex : Middle Aged male from Manhattan will be 5% more likely to switch)
C. What are the methodologies to identify If I can up-sell a customer ( Ex : Someone who bought this book also bought )
D. What is a supervised Segmentation and When will you use it ? ( When the target is clear, if the person will default on his loan)
E. What is the significance of entropy in Data Science ?
F. Exposure to several formula's ( sleep triggers as I call it). Many of the tools have in-built formula's but you still need some idea what these formula's are.
G. Don't get defensive, be comfortable when your colleague sprinkles words like like Classification ,regression, Similarity Matching, Clustering, Modelling, Entropy etc.

WHAT ELSE YOU WILL NEED ?
Data Science does not exist in silo. It helps in decision making . So should be your learning, Here are my suggestions:

1. First and foremost, you need to spend consistent time. If you are running short of time, don't even bother to start
2. For those who are interested in understanding Data science, courseera dot org conducts a free 8 weeks course on "Introduction To Data Science" by an eminent Stanford Professor. It needs time and Commitment
3. You can get real life examples to work on in coursesolve dot org ( ex: Analyze the sleep cycle)
4. As a Data Scientist, you will need to understand "Big Data" . Browse an article and even experts use Data Science and Big Data interchangeably. Hadoop is the core of Big Data,but it is a world of it's own.
5. Read and start experimenting with Hadoop , PIG , HIVE, HBASE and the variations it offers. I did a basics training at edureka dot in , an Indian firm, not a great training but enough for you to understand and then go on your own. But if time and money permits, go to cloudera website and sign up for training. you will not go wrong
6. I signed up for Amazon elastic map reduce which has a higher level abstraction (for developers it is the difference between using sqlplus vs TOAD). It is not free but very cheap.
7. Try to be the "umbilical cord that looks for a stomach to plug ", look for a mentor, look for opportunity in your firm or elsewhere to grow your Data scientist skills.

Most practical data mining book!

This book tells you how to **think** from the angle of data when you make decisions. I have read so many data mining books. They often claim themselves practical simply because they provide examples in addition to the technical details. Well, this statement can be seriously misleading since no one is going to solve the same problem as the one in the book. Without a good explanation on the intuition underlying the technique, it is hard to make true links with examples and eventually even harder, if not possible, to extend what you read to what you need to solve in real applications.

This book does an excellent job in this perspective. All the fundamental DM ideas (although there are so many different DM algorithms, they are all variations of only a few fundamental ideas) are explained by almost plain words illustrating human's thinking process. You will feel all the DM methods are familiar even though you have never learned them because they are presented just as a codification of rational thinking in everyday life. Once the intuition is uncovered this well, the examples in the book look so natural and you get a way to start doing your own DM tasks.

It can be your first DM book or an insightful book worth revisiting from time to time. I, as a DM educator, enjoy reading the book and learn a lot not only the insights but also how to transmit DM knowledge effectively.
