Three stories featuring Janie, Cabel, and her "gift"

This is an edition containing all three books. I wish that I could have rated them separately, because they all read quite differently.

WAKE-I loved this. I am usually not into books where people have "abilities", but Janie's seemed like it could exist in the realm of possibilities. And I am always interested in dreams. I enjoyed how this book fully explored her ability, and the slow tension build up to a relationship with Cabel. This book felt primarily like a romance between Janie and Cabel.

FADE-An overall sad book. It would have been nice if the "villians" in the story had been less predictable. With Janie working with Cabel for the police, there were less of her dream adventures in this story, which made it feel lacking. This book felt like mostly a book about Janie going undercover.

GONE-Heartbreaking. Janie learns who her father is. It is a more personal story than all the others. This is the book where Janie must decide what choices to make about her circumstances, both her home life and her ability.

Honestly. It's probably the best book I've ever read. I couldn't put it down. For three days I was locked up in my room reading this with only making appearences to my family for water and to use the bathroom. It was an amazing twist of romance and suspence. By far the most amazing thing I've ever read.

Insightful and Helpful Book

Insightful book written by a man who's been through the confusion, pain, and suffering of life with a BPD partner. It's pricey, I think, but if you are trying to find your way, this book is very helpful and worth buying, for sure! Another great read, is "Splitting" which discusses the issues involved in divorcing a partner with BPD...extremely helpful book!

This book changed my thinking about grammar and teaching it!

This wonderful book definitely changed my way of thinking, all for the best reasons. Robb clearly shows that the only way to teach grammar is to choose those parts of speech that clearly support writing: teach strong verbs and specific nouns; teach prepositional phrases to vary sentence beginnings and add details to short, general sentences. Robb shows how to involve students in thinking about grammar this way and also points out the students' improvement when they apply these grammar understandings to their own writing. I said farewell to worksheets long ago, for I realized there was no transfer to students' writing. I'm on board and enjoying teaching grammar with this book as my guide!

Laura Robb has Done It Again! Rave Reviews for Grammer Lessons & Strategies

Robb has totally changed the way grammar is taught with this book. Instead of giving students worksheets that research and teaching experience clearly shows doesn't work, Robb shows teachers how to help students understand how strong verbs, specific nouns, and subordinating conjunctions can improve their writing. The key, though, is to have students revise THEIR writing using these excellent principles. Finally, something practical and thought-provoking that works!

Not enough!

I was hoping to find a book that would aid me in teching grammar in my 6th grade classroom. Instead, I found a book that was not user friendly and did not offer many reproducible pages. Many of these lessons were not exciting and I did not feel that my students would have been excitied to learn about any of the concepts covered using the prescribed lessons. I was even bored reading it! This book is now collecting dust on my bookshelf.

Pedigree is a thought provoking case study into hiring practices of what the author terms Elite Professional Services firms (EPS). From the viewpoint of someone interested in inequality, Rivera explains how choices in target campuses, interview structure (fit, polish), and choice to use revenue-generating staff to interview (vs HR) stack the deck against non traditional candidates. Alternatively, for a jobseeker, Pedigree is an amazing insight because it informs about systemic biases and specific techniques to overcome them. Despite having prepared extensively for a summer internship interview at an EPS, this guide provided much deeper understanding about the interview evaluation and hiring committee process. Finally, I was impressed with the quality of the research methodology (hands-on research, inductive coding, accounting for author's own background). I highly recommend Pedigree for people interested in equitable and effective hiring practices and MBA/law school students seeking EPS jobs.

Nothing new, but an interesting read!

I'm not sure what to make of "Pedigree"'s marketing campaign. The book certainly has received a lot of hype, most provocatively in the Economist (headline: "How to join the 1%"). I'm baffled, however, that Amazon is promoting "Pedigree" as "vocational guidance."

"Pedigree" is not a "how-to" guide for joining elite firms. (Again, I'm not exactly sure why it's being promoted as such.) Rather, the book is an easy-to-read text that details/gives an overview of Rivera's research on hiring practices at a few investment banking, consulting and law firms. The insight the book offers is certainly not new for anyone familiar with these industries, but Rivera (heavily influenced by Bourdieu) offers a succinct, beautifully written sociological analysis of a world that is foreign to many -- and one that has not received much attention from academics.

I found the book a pleasure to read, though I found Rivera's analysis slightly repetitive and her presentation of nontraditional candidates who succeeded in accepting offers (chapter 10) lacking. I do look forward, however, to following her work in the future, and I am impressed by her life story (from a single-parent home in L.A. to Yale to Northwestern's Kellogg). Overall, this is a great read for scholars/professionals/laypeople who are interested in exploring the state of our "meritocracy" and are excited by the growing publication of "popular" books about American educational inequality ("Our Kids;" "Privilege;" etc).

I didn't know what to think. He wanted me to "entertain" a guest, and by the sounds of it, he meant sexually. He barely knew me. Did he assume I'd do anything for money? What a jackass. Just because I'm broke doesn't mean I'll put out for cash. I didn't know what to expect now, but I was second guessing my choice for the weekend.

On landing, a car greeted us. We were whisked to the resort, and before us sprawled a tropical oasis. The grounds were lush and gorgeous. A simple wooden sign signified we were at the resort, and an arrow pointed us down a winding driveway. It wasn't until we pulled up closer, that I realized how magnificent the place was. It wasn't massive, but it was dynamic and incredible. Glass, stone, plants, it all blended seamlessly with the surroundings. I wouldn't see the beach until later, and that was beautiful as well.

Getting out of the car, he told me the staff would take me to my quarters. I averted my eyes when the first gentleman came my way, asking to take my bag. "Right this way," he said. He wasn't wearing any clothing! Thankfully a few people lingering about were, but very little. A woman carrying towels had on black bikini bottoms, but appeared not to be wearing a shirt. I tried not to stare, and felt relief when I saw somebody walk by in white tennis shorts and a form fitting tank top. I didn't realize she was a guest. Most of the attendants wore next to nothing.

It's as if he could read my mind, "It's clothing optional, for both the clients and the staff."

I swallowed hard, at least I heard optional. That meant I'd be able to wear my uniform. "Mr. Golden mentioned something about a uniform?"

The man laughed, "If that's what you want to call it," he said.

My eyes went wide. What had I gotten myself into?

i like this book kept me interested in what happened next. Book two is better. gave it a four star cuz it was short but the realtionship developes fast and you get the plot of the story fast.

teasing, sexy & fun

This turned out to be a great story. At first I didn't like the female lead. She came off as pouty and grasping. But as the story progressed she developed nicely. The male lead was sexy and seductive and, turns out, wounded. He was just endearing and hot and I was rooting for a happy ending for the two of them by the end. I will definitely buy more books by this author!

Good book, although dated.

Fast Algorithms for Digital Signal Processing does cover DSP techniques (primarily FFT and convolution). It also has a few chapters covering the mathematical background of these algorithms, which is helpful to the beginner. There isn't any code, although algorithms are described in flowcharts and pseudo-code... It's a good book, but has the drawback that it's old and doesn't cover newer techniques (parallel algorithms).

Green is for the Money, Gold is for the Honeys

Known for his eccentric style, it's not unusual to see The Bishop Don "Magic" Juan wearing snake skin boots, a massive jewel-encrusted sombrero, more diamonds than Kay's Jewelers, and glasses that cover half his face. His way of speech has privileged us all with additions like "Chuuuch" and the ubiquitous "you dig" - it's his version of "um". You may have seen him in music videos for 50 Cent, Twista, and Da Brat. Or perhaps the Daily Show or The Girls Next Door. He's even got a fairly respectable IMDB page that boasts Old School, S.W.A.T., Friday After Next, and Starsky & Hutch - not to mention his scene dominating coming out parties in "Pimps Up, Ho's Down" and "American Pimp", documentaries about the pimping game. The man's a legend, and he's connected to music, sports, and movie celebrities.

From Pimp Stick to Pulpit-It's Magic: The Life Story of Don "Magic" Juan, is a biography - told from his sister's point of view - of a man at the apex of pimping. It's the tale of a Chi-town guerilla pimp, a man who sadistically abused, controlled, manipulated, and violently beat his stable of women. And somehow they loved him; they adored him. Being a mack is typically considered to be more of a mental game, you dig, but sometimes a ho needs to fear for her life. Most of the book is about this fear; pistol whippings, whip whip lashings, iron pimp stick beatings (think Pimp-Kendo). But he didn't hurt their pu#@ies or their mouths, because that would affect his paper. Yet they STILL came back to him because of a prostitution version of Stockholm Syndrome - they "loved" him.

It's one hundred pages of drugs, liquor, Rolls Royces, money, sex, talks between the whores and Don's sister, and, yes, bloody, merciless beatings. Then, it's just over ten pages of the PCP-induced metamorphosis from Pimp to Bishop. Seems a bit disingenuous and incomplete to me.

It's an interesting character study, and some insight into a pimp's life, but it's primarily a shallow tale of the grungy underbelly of prostitution in America. The true purpose wasn't about The Bishop's revelation and transformation; it's still about his fame, fashion, and money - primarily the money.

The Bishop Magic Don Juan walks and talks like a man who has several years invested in the game. Magic has immersed from the the mean streets of Chicago's West side into the United States most recognizable pimp. With unforgettable cameos in "PIMPS UP HO"S DOWN" and "AMERICAN PIMP" Bishop has solidified his place in the PIMP Hall of Fame sharing the spotlight with all stars, Ike Turner and ICE T....From PIMPSTICK to PULPIT is a life story told by Juan's older half-sister Anne. Anne doesn't pour gravy over the story by totally elevating her brother. She speaks of the horrific treatment that the women received at the hands of Bishop and the mental cruelty associated with the PIMP/HO game. Bishop has an awesome aura and is a terrific speaker. He constantly reminds us that his game is more mental than physical and his evolution is a noteworthy transformation. I read this book in approx. 3 1/2 hrs.....I gave it 3 because I wanted the author to go into further detail about Magic's transformation to the Pulpit..and less cruel details about how he treated his women

pretty good book

If you're looking for a manual on how to be a pimp, this is not the book. If you're looking to read a biography of a pimp at the top of his game, this is the book. Don Juan was ballin outta control and gave it all up to find god. It talks of his life in the beginning, his first turn out, all the hoes, pussy, parties, money, traveling, celebrities that he's experienced while in the pimp game. He then finds god and gives it all up while smoking PCP and having a "vision." I don't think it was god, it was more the sherm he was smoking that was messing with his mind and made him think it was god. His pimping buddy commited suicide while on PCP so that shows what it can do to your mind. I doubt god told him to stop. Anyways, its a nice bio of a pimpin legend so its worth the read.
