Not much here

From the prospective of someone looking for an account of the strategies and tactics of medieval naval warfare, I found this work lacking, and to an unfortunate degree, found myself disagreeing with the few physical arguments made regarding the historic accounts of medieval naval action. A better title for the work would have been "The Manufactories and the Politics of Maritime Conflict." The work is also very short. I would recommend this only those interested in the boatyards, galley sheds, and arsenals of the referenced period.

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway (PhD, Illinois Institute of Technology) is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. His honors and awards include an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College, the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977, and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex Müller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. He was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. Dr. Serway is the coauthor of COLLEGE PHYSICS, Eleventh Edition; PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Ninth Edition; PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. He has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings.

Chris Vuille (PhD, University of Florida) is associate professor of physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world's premier institution for aviation higher education. While he has taught courses at all levels, including postgraduate, his primary interest is the teaching of introductory physics courses. He conducts research in general relativity, astrophysics, cosmology, and quantum theory and was a participant in a special three-year NASA grant program where he studied properties of neutron stars. Don't buy the kindle version

In the kindle textbook, all of equations have the symbols replaced with numbers. For instance it would be length 5 width 5 height 1 volume, instead of length x width x height = volume. It does this in all examples and problems. It is especially frustrating. There is nothing wrong with the textbook itself, just the kindle version.

Great book for elementary school age kid

My son used this book as the basis for a research project on a person who changed the world. The book is written at a level that 3rd grade and above can handle on their own. It has pictures and lots of info about Shigeru. Also, if you are using it for a report there are lots of resources for more information listed in the back of the book. The only drawback, the book ends in 2007 or so. Lots has happened in the gaming world since then so the story is not exactly up to date. Also, some of the websites listed in the book are no longer in service. But I would recommend this book to other parents for their kids.

Good book, but very basic

My son loved the book and read it in 45 minutes. We were a bit disappointed that the level of this book was a bit below our expectations. I would estimate that it is geared to a 4th grade reading level. Overall it was expensive for what was delivered, but any kid fascinated with video games (espeically Mario) will eat this up.

Beautiful and engrossing story

I loved this book and was swept up in it from the get go. The story is lovely and engrossing. The girls are fully formed. The interwoven stories of saints was an interesting and fascinating aspect. I'm usually turned off when a book changes POV characters (I often find it takes me out of the story too much) but the way Ms Domet executed the brief forays into the "other" Guineveres backstories was beautifully done. This is also one of the best depictions of adolescent female friendship I have ever read - I found myself deeply invested in all 4 Guineveres and was sad to see the last page. I look forward to reading more from Ms Domet. Highly recommend!

Do not miss this rich tapestry of a book!

This book is an act of creation with a capital C. Domet weaves together brilliantly her own, female version of the trinity. This one with four girls who have been abandoned by parents who are unable to give their daughters the upbringing they deserve, and for whom the girls never cease waiting, writing letters and praying in the hope of being taken home. The 4 Guineveres, each with her own nickname and very different personality, find in their connection with each other a sense of belonging and unity.

The four engage in a multitude of sometimes humorous, always poignant escapades in an effort to find a physical and ultimately a mental way to transcend the grim life at the convent - a kind of anti-Hogwarts - where the nuns and priests can seem as stifled and starved for affection as their charges.

The Guineveres' eye-opening experiences with the nuns and priests who care for them, especially the alcohol-challenged Father James and the religiously "constipated" Sister Fran, inadvertently teach them the very lessons they were supposed to be sheltered from. These and their shifting relationships with the other girls around them provide a clear-eyed view into what it is like to become a woman in a world that both glorifies and excoriates the female - ironically timely given the current social climate.

The narrator, the adult Vere, who retells the Guineveres' story with the wisdom and tolerance born of time and reflection, gives the tale an additional perspective, untainted by anger or judgement, while building dramatic tension and interest. No heavy handed voice here. Domet uses Vere sparingly and in just the right doses to enhance the novel and move it forward.

The Guineveres is, in its own way, both a literal and figurative hagiography, based not in traditional religion, but in the search of those starved for love, battling loneliness and abandonment, trying to find and make meaning where none appears to exist, making saints of us all.
The novel is also irresistible in the elegance of its construction. A literary masterpiece that should be read and reread to discover new layers of meaning.
This is a book to be savored for its depth, its deft and original use of language, and a power and inventiveness that make it irresistible. Don't expect a guilty and fleeting pleasure. This one will stay with you and change the way you see the world.

Best book I've read in quite some time!

I finished reading this book last week, and can't stop thinking about the characters and the story. I'm haunted, mesmerized, and delighted by this original tale, and could not put the book dowm once I started reading. I highly recommend, and hope to see more books by this author!

This guide to Tracy's Kenpo is a tech by tech breakdown of all belt requirements from Yellow to 4th black.. This tome is worth the money. If you practice Tracy's Kenpo, this book has a better breakdown of the techniques than any other source Ive seen before... My original Tracy's pages dated from '92 are still in use, but this one is better! :-) Still, not a substitute for training without a Sifu/Sensei, or partners!!!

Technical errors - that is what I selected when I got my money back from amazon for this book. I quickly started going through the ebook and noticed that the kenpo clock on two pages was completely out of whack. A circle was pictured on one page and on that page also and the next page there was a mashed potato and onion spaghetti mess of numbers strewn all over the pages in a random order that looked like someone had thrown them on the page like someone flicking paint off a large paint brush onto the wall - they were everywhere - a big jumbled mess - it made no sense what so ever. I tried loading this ebook on different devices and the jumbled mess just appeared on those devices also. Who wants to pay money for something that doesn't work correctly. Makes me wonder if the kenpo owner of the company typed it up himself on his word processor and couldn't figure out how to make the graphics work correctly - so they just left it and they went to print.

Thankfully I got my money back on this losing proposition.

The approach used by Mr. Yeschke is to use knowledge bases and disciplines not normally associated with this subject matter. Of particular interest is the psychological or 'human need' to construct. This is the single most important element of an interviewing text, as the urge to reveal information, or not to, is fundamentally based upon an interviewer's ability to correctly interpret human behaviour.

About the Author
Charles L. Yeschke has been working in the investigation field for more than 30 years. As an FBI special agent, Mr. Yeschke was certified as a polygraphist and conducted hundreds of detection of deception examinations in various federal criminal investigations. He has authored numerous articles and publications on interviewing. Currently, he is the proprietor of Charles Yeschke Associates, a firm providing confidential investigation services, security/loss prevention consulting, and training seminars.

Great stuff !!

If you are interested in conducting serious and professional investigative interviews this is one of the first books you should pick up. It talks about numerous interviewing techniques on how to extract vital information from the person your interviewing without asking "leading questions". I got over 5 pages of notes out of the first few chapters alone.

Excellent Source For Real, Practical, and Effective Info...

As a licensed private investigator and an avid reader of investigative texts, I can personally attest that this text successfully meets the true test of value for investigative texts - it imparts the reader with ability to effectively employ its teachings. Mr. Yeschke has done an excellent job of properly articulating the techniques/procedures necessary to perform effective interviews.

The text is a perfect combination of real, practical, and effective techniques/procedures and actual case examples. The text goes into great detail in building the basic foundation of effective interviewing skills, such as understanding human psychology (in deception), proper interview preparation, successfully employing the self-fulfilling prophecy, tactical concepts, evidence collection, public vs. private sector investigations, the interview process, controlling the interview environment, proper phrasing of questions (closed vs. open questions), and evaluating the evidence obtained from the interview. The text then demonstrates practical application of these skills using actual case examples. I highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn effective investigative interviewing skills.

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

I have been a police officer for 5 years, and have received alot of training in the police field. In 5 years I have found that there is very minimal training in obtaining confessions from suspects. Obtaining voluntary confessions from suspects is a very important task in today's modern world. I found this book to be very informative and it explains to the reader the many parts to an interview before leading into an interogation. This book also also explains that showing empathy works better at obtaining confessions than the old methods of coersion. I enjoyed the book and am excited to get to apply its teachings in my interviews. I believe that the methods taught in this book are worth while and will work if you are patient and use them properly

Facing heavy competition from similar publications, Franklin took the unusual and controversial approach of injecting witty, unexpected entries between standard tables of tides, planetary motion, weather predictions and other facts. In the debut edition, faithfully reproduced here, he included under the heading Principal Kings of Europe, ""Poor Richard, an American Prince, without subjects, his wife being Viceroy over him, born October 23, 1684, age 49."" The Almanack went on to become the most popular book of it's kind in colonial America and was published annually for the next 25 years.
