Originally written in the late 1970s, this book was untouched for more than 35 years. McLuhan passed away before it went to press, but Logan always intended to finish it. Even though much has changed in the three decades since work on the project was halted, many of the points that McLuhan and Logan made in the era of ‘electric media’ are highly cogent in the era of ‘digital media.’
Looking at the future of the library from the perspective of McLuhan’s original vision, Logan has carefully updated the text to address the impact of the Internet and other digital technologies on the library. McLuhan prophetically foreshadowed the transformative effect that computing would have on �mass library organization,� saying it would become obsolescent. It is perhaps no coincidence that a key theme of the book is that libraries must strive to create context given today’s hyper information overload. The authors believe this task can be achieved by putting together a compact library of books providing an overview of human culture and scholarship.
This book is based on the original text that McLuhan and Logan wrote. Logan’s updates are integrated in the main text and clearly identified by markers. This preserves the flow of the original text and at the same time provides updates in the context of the original study. Other significant updates include two new chapters: Chapter 6 provides a LOM (Laws of the Media) treatment of the new post-McLuhan digital media, and Chapter 7 discusses the impact of these media on today’s library. A second part to the concluding Chapter has been added to update some of the conclusions reached in 1979, and there is also a new preface.

About the Author
Robert K. Logan (PhD., MIT, 1965) is Professor Emeritus of Physics and St. Michael’s College Fellow at the University of Toronto. He is the Chief Scientist of sLab at OCAD University. He is the author of many books and articles including Understanding New Media: Extending Marshall McLuhan (Peter Lang, 2010). The book follows on from their joint authorship of Alphabet, mother of invention (1977).
Marshall McLuhan (PhD Cambridge, 1943) was a Professor of English at St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto from 1946 to his passing in 1980. He was the founder of the field of media ecology and author of many revolutionary books and articles including The Gutenberg Galaxy, Understanding Media and The Medium is the Massage. He is the originator of such iconic phrases as �the global village� and �the medium is the message.�

During the period of the absolute monarchy, he insisted that government officials should be held accountable for their actions, and in the years that followed the revolution he spoke out strongly against the rise of the military. He also established the first line of female monks in the history of Siam and fought to abolish capital punishment. The place that he properly belonged, said the leader of his country, Field Marshal Phibul Songkhram, was inside a mental institution.

Written as creative nonfiction, this is the engaging story of one man's relentless attempt to build a more humane society. Often told in Narin's own words, it is an unlikely tale of Buddhism, politics, and the creation of modern Thailand.

A triumphant accomplishment in honor of a quixotic hero all but forgotten to history

This book is a must buy for readers who:

a) enjoy the intelligent use of wit and language in the detailed telling of a story;
b) have an interest--or receptivity to cultivating an interest--in the modern social and political history of Thailand;
c) might appreciate the example of a complex and often enigmatic figure who has the courage/audacity to devote his adult life to challenging people in power with accountability (frequently backfiring with its own twisted and injust accountability exercised against him);
d) have an appreciation for nonfiction which reads as far-from-dry entertainment while at the same time is clearly the outcome of a depth of historical research into an obscure subject matter whose obscurity makes the throroughness and depth of the research worthy of the reader's awe and gratitude;
e) who are game for chewing slowly, savoring a book rather than hastily gobbling it down for sparkle and crunch.

In short, this book is a delightful read, a fascinating portrait of a fascinating figure of the twentieth century in the country once known as Siam, where it is not considered polite--like in so many other times and places--to speak truth to power, relentlessly and with relentless charm which is found by those in power to be more relentless (and threatening) than charming. My recommendation is to buy it early and often.

[I gladly disclose that I have known the author for years and was a reader of the book in manuscript form during its last rounds of editing. I have just finished reading, for the first time, the book in its final published form from start to finish. This review is entirely heart-felt, entirely unsolicited, entirely uncompensated, and entirely justified. I do not give a 5-star review lightly, even for friends.]

A free, fun book for Kindle

While O. Henry's stories were most certainly not written recently, they are consistently well written; sometimes comical, sumetimes sad, and many times absolutely wonderful. Henry uses powerful language, themes speaking of the social classes in New York during this era, and often vivid imagery. While his introductions may seem quite repetitive, each story is unique and causes one to contemplate sometimes weighty issues. The setting of the early 1900's New York provides an interesting backdrop for the stories. Overall, O. Henry's work is fascinating and provides quick relief from stresses in everyday life, and it certainly helps that this book is free for Kindle.

Tales of Old New York: Wodehouse-- with a Twist

This anthology contains 21 tales set in New York City at the dawn of the twentieth century, plus the bonus of 4 tales set in the exotic tropics of a fictitious banana republic. O. Henry focuses his curious literary microscope on the diverse lives of various residents of this famous metropolis. Some of his protagonists can claim idle-rich status, but more represent the middle class and many the poverty-stricken milieus. Indulgent readers will discover the flavor of a century past, rub shoulders with men on the other side of the law, and commiserate with thwarted lovers--all the while expecting the trademark
O. Henry ending with a Twist.
But the author's
style reminds us of Wodehouse's moonstruck romantic pairs and even predate TV's innocuous "Love, American Style" episodes, in which we do not take their amorous escapades seriously. Then, to throw us off guard, he spikes the anthology with a few pathetic and even tragic stories. One wonders if he was gently trying to raise the social consciousness of the literate public.
Various ethnic cgroups with their inherent city-acquired bigotry become the target of his witty pen, especially the Irish but also Italians. After all, his beloved olde New York was a true melting pot from the Ellis Island kitchen.
Narrated in first as well as third person, these stories incorporate
flagrant slang and one actually boasts a canine narrator! They
challenge contemporary readers with antiquated vocabulary
intermingled with literary, Biblical and artsy reference. O. Henry will repeatedly send one to a dictionary or encyclopedia with his liberal sprinkling of foreign words. Like the British before him, O Henry contemplates the danger of the temptations of a tropical Paradise. Will Yankees "Go native?" as so many English did before them? Of course,the real cocoanut conundrum is to choose your five favorites!

Soap and cosmetic recipes have been around for thousands of years. Before the discovery of synthetic scents and colors (ca 1890) and detergents (ca 1930's) nearly all the ingredients used to create soap, cosmetics and perfumes were "natural" (not necessarily SAFE, but certainly derived from natural sources). This book contains over 500 recipes for many different categories of soap and cosmetic products, including soap, creams and lotions, balms and salves, oils, bath fizzies and bombs, salts and soaks, powders, exfoliants and scrubs, clays and masks, perfumes, and products for the hair, teeth and household. There is also a short chapter on the strange and bizarre (not recommended for actual use). The recipes were compiled from antique and vintage books and several websites, focusing on those that made using safe, natural ingredients (recipes containing arsenic, mercury, lead and other toxic materials were not included). The focus of the soap recipes are pre-1930 (before detergents) and a large percentage of the cosmetic recipes are pre-1900. Also included is an extensive glossary of the ingredients used in the recipes provided, along with possible alternative ingredients when the original is exhorbitantly expensive or generally unavailable. These recipes can be used as-is (although not all of them have been tested), or can be used as a starting point for developing unique natural soap and cosmetics formulations of your own.

About the Author
Marie Gale is a self-professed computer geek who actually likes reading laws, statutes, regulations, court cases and old books. She probably would have been a lawyer or a chemist has things worked out differently. As it is, in 1998 she started making and selling handcrafted soap and cosmetics. Her tendency toward research of all kinds, led her to delving into labeling regulations, resulting in her book "Soap and Cosmetic Labeling" (2008). Involvement with the community of soap and cosmetic handcrafters and seeing the need for good manufacturing practices, brought about her book "Good Manufacturing Practices for Handcrafters" (2012). Her love of old books became the driving force behind her extensive library of antique and vintage books about the making and use soap and cosmetics, particularly those products made with natural ingredients. Wanting to share at least some of the amazing recipes available in her library, Marie published "300 Years of Natural Soap & Cosmetic Recipes" (2011). Marie lives in Southwestern Oregon with the man of her life. When not participating in the handcrafted soap and cosmetic community, she can be found doing website programming, managing her family's timber ranch or researching her family tree.

"Strange News from Another Star" is a short fairy tale written by Hermann Hesse in April 1915, one year after the start of the 1st World War. In the fairy tale, two stars are juxtaposed.

On one star, life is valued, beauty is appreciated, reason is respected, humane traditions are cultivated, love and happiness are experienced and peace prevails.

On the other star, jealousy, hatred and despair are cultivated, wars are waged incessantly, battlefield murder is officially condoned, the countryside is left strewn with unattended cadavers and fear prevails.

The latter is clearly our world as Hesse saw it, rendered mythical, and the former is an idealized world that ours could be.

Unlike his earlier works, the story does not lend itself to rational interpretation. It is essentially a fairy tale dealing with the subconscious, magic and the dream world.

The fairy tale represents an intermediate stage between Hesse's initial ambiguous stance to the war, as an internationalist who tolerated war and a pacifist who looked forward to a German victory, and his later active anti-war campaign.

The story, which was titled “Merkw�rdige Nachricht von einem anderen Stern” in German, was one of several that brought Hesse into conflict with supporters of the war, his country and its government.

A child of missionaries, Hesse s writings are heavily influenced by Eastern mysticism, spirituality and the search for self-knowledge, themes that resonated with the hippie culture of the 1960s and which contributed to a resurgence in interest for Hesse s work following his death in 1962.

I read all the reviews and I was expecting all eight short stories and the book I received only contains an Introduction, one short story: "Strange News from Another Star", and an Autobiography. I went to return it and I am getting a full refund without having to return this 28 page book, so that's nice.

Definitely not an introduction!!!!!!!

The author is deeply oriented to biomechanics of fluids both in the first and second part of the book,despite the fact it is supposed to have different approaches. The first chapters are devoted to complex mathematical demonstrations of stress-strain models and materials engineering, topics that shouldn't be considered to be suitable for starting studying biomechanics.
Definitely not an introduction. Highly recommended for intermediate and advanced courses.

Lots of mechanics, not much biology

I hoped to use this text to teach an introductory course in biomechanics to engineers. It seems that the majority of the material is discussing general mechanics (both solid and fluid) with complete derivations. Only at the end of each chapter is there a short section on how the subject relates to biology or medicine which is what a general engineering student may not have been exposed to. On the other hand, it goes into more detail than a biology student probably needs to know. In the end, I found the book Physics of the Human Body (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering) to be a much more well rounded text that seamlessly integrated physics and engineering with biology.

"an artist, a man, a failure MUST PROCEED": an ars poetica

We learn here from the great Estlin Cummings, if we did not already know, that "Art is a mystery; all mysteries have their source in a mystery-of-mysteries who is love" (note the "who" denoting aliveness, as opposed to "which" denoting undeadness): "and if lovers may reach eternity directly through love herself, their mystery remains essentially that of the loving artist whose way must lie through his art, and of the loving worshipper whose aim is oneness with his god."
For the mature Cummings fan, this volume is a must. It traces the genesis of Cummings as poet and as man. It gives us his opinion (at which sophomores might marvel) that no one should venture free verse until he has MASTERED the sonnet, rondeau, ballade, etc. It gives us a syllabus of poems that he loved in his youth and continued to love in his adulthood: Dante, Swinburne, Shakespeare's 116th sonnet, Charles d'Orleans, Walther von der Vogelweide, Shelley, Keats. There are words of praise for Dante Gabriel Rossetti's sonnets. There are ten of E E Cummings' sonnets included in these lectures (but my copy of "i" contains three significant typographical howlers).
We see the libertarian Cummings, the man who "values freedom" and abominates "the subhuman superstate USSR." We see his almost impenetrable parody of Communism in a snippet of his book EIMI, about a trip to Leninist Moscow. We see bits of the play "Santa Claus," his gleeful proverbs called "jottings," and a few paragraphs in defense of Ezra Pound.
We have in the six nonlectures the heart of a man in love with life and spring and joy and birth and (yes of course) love. "To feel something is to be alive." And woe betide the reader who feels nothing when she or he reads these marvellous pages.

These six "nonlectures" give more insight into ee cummings than anything else I've ever read about or by him (except, perhaps, for the Enormous Room, also a fantastic book). He talks about his family, his beliefs, and colors it all with true cummings style. It's delightful.
