Differently out: in lieu of the prevailing disorder and brokenness, the book urges us to search for a new "wholeness" and just peace.

The book is intercultural and also inter-disciplinary. In terms of non-Western intellectual and spiritual legacies, the book offers new interpretations of leading texts in the Indian and Chinese traditions. Thus, emphasis is placed on the ideas of "world maintenance" (loka-samgraha) in Hinduism and of "All-Under-Heaven" in classical Chinese thought. Although a central thrust of the text is for a new wholeness, the goal is not a uniform synthesis where everything would be swallowed up in a bland unity. Rather the issue is how to preserve diversity of the world in its rightful integrity, by linking all elements in a complex web of interconnections and "relationality".

Plain explanation and lots of practice

So far so good. I kinda expected it to be a heavy book with lots of theoretical and academic explanation of pronunciation, but it turns out to be much more approachable. Although I personally prefer all the theory stuff, this book still does an excellent job in explaining all the concepts plainly and clearly.

About the Author

Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Okalahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world.

Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

This book is excellent - it's very through

I have been programming for over 40 years (fortran and cobol) and only in my retirement have I started to learn OOP with JAVA. This book is excellent - it's very through. Reading the negative reviews I can relate to their pain - it's the same pain that I have seen in young engineers learning a complicated subject for the first time (thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and so on). It takes a while to develop the specific technical sophistication to comprehend the subject matter. Don't give up - it takes reading, and re-reading, and doing all the exercises (and spend the time to actually type in the examples (don't just download them)).

The phases involved in the creative process were first described by German physiologist Herman Helmholtz in the late nineteenth century. (Edwards, 1986, p. 3) He identified three stages of creativity: saturation, incubation and illumination. In the first decade of twentieth century, French mathematician Henri Poincar� identified a fourth step that follows the other three. Verification is putting a solution into concrete form and checking it for errors or usefulness. (shamelessly stolen from http://www.statpac.org/walonick/creativity.htm).

So remember - the first painful step in learning is having your brain saturated, then it has to sit there a while before the 'lightbulb comes on". Finally you have to put it into practice for your brain to 'close the loop.'

Again - this is the best JAVA book I have found that teaches without having to sit in classroom.

I've created many cool programs that no other study of programming had ever ...

Thanks to Liang's creative ways to challenge us through programming problems such as moving a ball across a sine wave or creating a random-walk pattern, I've created many cool programs that no other study of programming had ever taught me. His programming challenges grasp your mind into the passion of puzzle solving and you'll be so addicted that you can't stop working on the problem until you've created something you can be proud of and thus increase your confidence as a programmer and excel to the top of your field.

Teaching the basics of programming is easy, but creating puzzles of programming to develop your skills as a computer scientist is hard - and Liang's book achieves that. I hope he creates more programming puzzles so I can code for days on end.

I was a student in numerous classes with Dr. Liang and have always kept up abreast of changes in the Java API by purchasing Dr. Liang's books. He is a great teacher and really knows and keeps up with the latest. Add this one to your collection as a great resource. Dr. Liang has really made significant improvements in the style, format and readability of the book and as always, has great examples and numerous supplemental resources to go deeper into any specific topic.

Good goals, but can lead to defeat.

I as a pastor am reading this book to join in with several men in my congregation who are going through it. While I agree with the character qualities listed for a leader, I am struggling with the means to become that type of leader. For me, godly character comes from spending time in the presence of God, not from struggling to attain that character. Self-examination, which is good (see Psalm 139:23-24), should lead us to repentance and worship in the presence of God. It is only in the presence of the greatest good that my heart is transformed to be like Christ, which then gives me the motivation and strength to be the spiritual man I am called to be.

I grew up under a theology that stressed holiness by human effort, and it is only after suicidal guilt that I finally began to understand how God transforms us through His grace. Identity must precede activity. This book seems to lay out the correct biblical qualities of a leader, but stresses the wrong means for how to get these qualities. They are not something that can be attained apart from an intimate love relationship with the one who gives them. Spend time with Jesus. Let Him love you. Let His beauty convince you that His ways are better than the other ways of living.

A better leadership book is Crawford Loritts book, "Leadership as Identity."

Great book to read for students who wants to become a leader or Christian minister.

Great book which shares what it means to be a Christian minister. I read this book for my practical theology course called "Christian minister and Ministry" class at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. This book is a wonderful book and very easy to read. It also shares to its readers what it means to be in a minitry, what they should expect in their ministry, and qualification you need/ can develop to be a minister of the Gospel. This book is also great book to read for people who aspires to be a Christian leader in different organizations.

Spiritual Leadership

This book was required reading for a Leadership class that I had to take. I am so thankful that it was. Spiritual Leadership is one of the best books ever written on Christian leadership. This book is a timeless classic in teaching the principles of leadership. Spiritual Leadership was written from two series of dynamic messages delivered to Christian Leaders overseas in 1964 and 1966. This is not a how to book; but a book that emphasizes walking in character, integrity, humility, and obedience to the Word of God.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I plan to continually read this book through out the years to come. It is an excellent guide for any one who is considering becoming a leader. It is spiritually accurate. I wish someone had place this book in my hands or at least told me about this book twenty-five years ago. It would have saved a lot of heartache and unnecessary anxiety on my part.

Spiritual Leadership will help educate you on what it takes to be a leader for God. It will help anyone build a foundation to stand upon in any position of leadership in or out of church. It teaches you how God honors, protects and vindicates those whom he has chosen as His leaders.

The digital photography revolution may have taken place somewhat secretively inside dark boxes-cameras and computers-but the impact of digital photography, which is the subject of photographer and educator Lipkin's thorough introduction to the medium, has yet to be fully realized. Since its invention, photography has been a tool to both authenticate and manipulate experience. It is precisely this paradox that has made the medium so intriguing for critics, historians, photographers and viewers. But photography has never been as untrustworthy as it is now, and, according to Lipkin, it has also never been as creative. In accessible prose, Lipkin illustrates how digital photography has expanded the medium's expressive potential, ultimately bringing it closer to painting. This new definition of photography is supported by illustrations that range from abstract to realist to fantastical, with an emphasis on more challenging, if not creepy, images. The inclusion of computer-generated, digital images that appear to be photographs, but are not, such as visual representations of subatomic structures and avatars, may seem unwarranted, but fit Lipkin's idea that photography's authority and meaning have radically changed. Lipkin takes some provocative and challenging stances, such as arguing that we have reverted to a 19th-century way of seeing with this new technology, making for an intriguing read.

About the Author
For 15 years, Jonathan Lipkin has practiced and observed the phenomenon of digital photography as a photographer, writer, and educator both in the U.S. and internationally. He is associate professor of digital media at Ramapo College of New Jersey and serves on the graduate faculty of the School of Visual Arts' Computer Art and Photography and Related Media programs. He is coauthor of In the Realm of the Circuit. He lives in Brooklyn.

Persuasive but not very inspiring!

This book achieves what it sets out to do, but I was disappointed in the author's uncritical enthusiasm. The survey of artists who use digital manipulation to make creative images is not very inspiring. The reproductions are high quality but there is much better work (pictures) out there being published. The text is even less inspiring because the author is so sold on digital imaging that he seems to be selling digital cameras and even sings the praises of cell phone cameras.

I agree that digital images are much easier to make and hence many more images are probably being made now than in the past, but the author doesn't seem to see much value in the sparkling resolution and breathtaking contrast of traditional hand-made prints from film, compared to the relatively flat digital prints the industry is trying to sell people. The author repeats commercial claims about the supposed quality of digital images but such claims have not been confirmed by independent tests.

Instead of technical virtuosity in the medium we are supposed to settle for aesthetic rhetoric about the thought-provoking nature of what are often uninteresting and unrealistic subjects. Digital imaging is certainly cleaner and more convenient than traditional photography, but let's not confuse those qualities with the vividness of a chemically processed transparency or silver or platinum print.

Modern abstract art has been criticized as a more efficient (cheaper) way to mass produce paintings for sale, and digital images can be accused of the same thing. This book is an uncritical look at the digital revolution, and that is not very educational.

Update: High quality digital cameras are now available for about $2,000, and the flat images typical of such cameras can be rendered more three-dimensional by adding a slightly S-shaped curve in Photoshop. But you can still get a used medium format film camera for half the price. When the price of high-quality digital cameras comes down to $1,000 I'll reread this book and rewrite this review!

A tour-de-force of What Can Be Done

The one thing you can say about digital photography is that it is certainly changing fast. And in this book Mr. Lipkin shows what a series of what you might call photographer/artists have done using digital images and computer manipulation of those images.

In many cases, you might view these images as closer to paintings than photographs. In other cases, the images are of things that we cannot see ourselves, MRI images from inside the skull of a living person, mountains on the surface of Venus. Other images are from somewhere in the mind of the producer. These might be composite pictures of several people, these might be images that start with a photograph but which now are so distorted and colors so changed that their origin is difficult to see.

This is not a book of techniques, it is a book of results, of ideas from the minds of people who are carrying digital photography into new areas.

This leads to an examination of the role that mythic narrative plays in social and self formation, drawing on the literary, feminist and psychoanalytic theories of Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, Helene Cixous and Judith Butler to delineate the ways in which women's mythos can transcend the limitations of logos and give rise to potent new models for individual and cultural regeneration.
In this light, Susan Sellers offers challenging new readings of a wide range of contemporary women's fiction, including works by A. S. The premise is fantastic in todays culture

The premise is fantastic in todays culture. I've heard many arguments in many venues, and somehow especially in church environments, and most have forgotten that the point of Apologetics is Christ. Joel has brought the focus back to were it should be. While not covering all aspects of the endless critiques of the Gospel, it goes in depth enough for the common conversation to show the accuracy of the Bible is very hard indeed to dispute. While many say a world view build on the Scriptures is self referencing, this shows how it can be proven through many outside sources.
It then does an excellent job of presenting talking points and logical arguments that will help you evangelize, not just win an argument.
In short, it keeps the focus of Apologetics on Christ, and on evangelism, and is an easy read and easy to understand. Thank you!!!

Some good and some not so good

What do I think of Joel Furches's book published by Crosslink Publishers? Let's plunge into the Deeper Waters and find out.

Awhile back Joel Furches sent me this book, which recently I finally got around to reading. Normally, the only direct apologetics books I read today are those that are sent to me and I mainly try to keep in mind how an audience unfamiliar with apologetics would take it. Generally, if you're well-read, you won't find much new in many classical apologetics books. That's not a bad thing necessarily. Everyone needs a start somewhere.

So what are the positives of Furches's book?

I certainly appreciate that Christ must remain the center of our apologetics. Furches rightly points out that too often we can get bogged down on secondary issues such as Inerrancy or the age of the Earth. The main point that needs to be proven is that Jesus is who He said He was and that He rose from the dead.

I do appreciate that Furches has a chapter in here on how to do apologetics. I do not agree with all that he said, and more of that is coming up later, but knowing how to do apologetics is just as important as having the content of apologetics.

Furches is also right on how this must be done in our churches today. Christianity is in a state of lethargy here in America with most people not knowing what they believe beyond "faith." The new atheists can make easy pickings of such people, not because the new atheists are so strong, they're not, but because the ones they are going against are so weak.

I also agree that too often our worldviews have been like a house of cards. Each doctrine of Christianity has been given as much importance as every other one and so if one falls, then everything falls. To point to earlier examples, I know of Christians that if they found out the Bible had an error in it, they would abandon their faith immediately. I also know several who thought Christianity was disproven when they were convinced the Earth is old.

Now what are my concerns?

First, while Furches does often cite Biblical scholars, many times, he does not, and these times can be concerning. I really don't like seeing John MacArthur used as if he was a Bible scholar when there are real New Testament scholars to go to for the matters that MacArthur is consulted on. Also, while I do respect people like J. Warner Wallace greatly, it can too often look like an apologist quoting another apologist. I would prefer to go back to the scholarly sources. Wallace certainly cites them in his work, so why not instead of citing Wallace, go back to the people that Wallace cites?

Second, I thought some arguments could have used some improvement. I am thankful for a look at each of the Gospels to show they are by eyewitnesses or trace back to eyewitnesses, but would this not have been a good time to mention Richard Bauckham's groundbreaking work on the topic? Since the most defense was applied to Mark, would it not be helpful to show that Mark is an inclusio account that directly links itself to Peter?

Third, some arguments were just suspicious to me. Consider for instance the claim that there was some of Mark found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. I do not know a specialist on the Dead Sea Scrolls today who takes this opinion. Putting an argument that could be highly spurious in a work could lead people to question the rest of one's research.

Fourth, I found the section on prophecy troubling. To begin with, there was nothing about how to interpret prophecy in the OT that I saw. What is a Christian to do when met with passages like Hosea 11:1 being cited in Matthew 2? Without an informed hermeneutic on the NT's usage of the OT and how prophecy was understood in Second Temple Judaism, you could quickly be devastated by others who are sadly just as ignorant of such realities. I also was surprised there was no mention of Daniel 2 or Daniel 9 which I consider excellent prophecies with the timing of Jesus.

Finally, with how to do apologetics, I would disagree in some areas. There are times I am answering a question and I am NOT trying to get the person to come to Jesus. The person is hostile, but it is a public place. My goal is to shut them down since they are a threat to others coming to the cross. I think in such times being more tough in one's approach can be helpful and in fact I see this in the Bible regularly.

In conclusion, it's kind of a mixed bag. If you don't have any apologetics training, this could be a good start. I would hope in future editions the author would take my concerns into consideration as areas for improvement.
