Getting a late start on writing

I rate this book as being very helpful to me as a potential writer. I am 76 yrs old and a little late in starting my writing. It is not intended as a career, but as an enjoyable way to express my opinions and my imagination. One of my books, a very small one based on some experiences I had as a volunteer at our aquarium, made me look at my knowledge of our English language and how I understand it. I ordered this book as a helpful guide and found it to be a primer. Just what I needed!

Yes, I would recommend this book to anyone a little weak on the structure off the English language, for whatever purpose. The purchase of it could not have been easier and the rating of the condition of the book was accurate. They said it was in very good condition, and it was!

Great science fiction thriller

This book has just the right creepy undertones that makes for a good science fiction series. This is just the beginning but the happenings in this Republic appear to be complex and evil. You will have many unanswered questions that will absolutely force you to buy the next installment but this book is so well crafted that you will not only not mind, you will be searching Amazon for a series by this author that is already completed. Spring for the 99 cents. You will be wanting more before you are even a few pages into it.

This is the first chapter of a book that has made me want to know more about the Republic, about the soldiers, about the experiment and science and about Thurber, the main character. The first chapter leaves you with many questions about how Thurber came to be where he is and about the trial that he has been called to. I am looking forward to reading more as the plot is entertaining and full of intrigue.

Grade 2-6-The touching story of a terminally ill girl is recreated in this audio version of the book by Eleanor Coerr (Puffin, 1977). Based on the true story of a young Japanese girl who contracts leukemia as a result of the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, the story follows Sadako as a healthy schoolgirl winning relay races, through her diagnosis with the atom bomb sickness, to her long stay in the hospital. It is in the hospital that she first begins making origami cranes to pass the time. Her ultimate goal is to make 1000, but she dies with only 644 completed. Sadako's classmates finish making the remaining cranes, and all 1000 are buried with her. Read by Christina Moore, the recording has excellent narration and sound quality and is particularly notable for the children's voices. Moore uses subtle nuances to distinguish between characters, and conveys a sense of Sadako's gentle spirit and courage. The recording is further enriched at the end by an interesting biography of Eleanor Coerr that explains how the author came to write Sadako's story. Schools and public libraries will benefit from adding this recording to their collections.

Chizuko came to visit her friend Sadako in the hospital. She had a piece of gold paper that she had cut into a large square.

"Watch!" she said, and she folded the paper over and over, and it turned into a beautiful crane.

"If a sick person folds one thousand paper cranes," Chizuko said, "the gods will grant her wish and make her well again."

Sadako Sasaki was only twelve years old when she died. She was two when an atom bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima in Japan, where she lived with her family. Ten years later, she had leukemia as a result of radiation from the bomb.

Sadako had folded six hundred and forty-four cranes. The flock hung above her bed on strings. Her classmates folded the rest.

Today Sadako is a heroine to the children of Japan, who visit her memorial in Hiroshima Peace Park to leave the paper cranes they make in her honor.

Touching Japanese story well told. Convincing message for those of us campaigning for a nuclear-weapon free world. How long do we hang on with hope? Paper cranes are amazing in themselves. Wonderful to watch anyone who knows how to make them.

Just get this book and read it. Then read it to your children and grandchildren.

I bought my copy almost 20 years ago, and I still refer to it all the time. No, I'll never be able to do everything in this book--a 100% perfect second deal will forever elude me. But the wealth of material here is staggering. You get a chapter devoted to each sleight, such as false shuffles, palms, lifts, and passes. You also get chapters with amazing routines using the sleights. If you conscientiously study this book, there is very little in card magic that you will be unable to do. That said, the book has sparse diagrams and a writing style from almost 60 years ago, which means you really have to concentrate when reading it. I was disappointed to see that the beautifully bound Dover edition is out-of-print. If you see a copy, grab it. Don't hesitate; the world of advanced card magic awaits you.

Essential Reading for the Cardician

This book is comprehensive in scope-it covers about all of the basic techniques the card worker needs to know. It goes far beyond this, however. All techniques taught are described in *excruciating* detail so as to leave nothing to the imagination. It also includes ongoing words of advice on and entire chapters devoted to the _real_ secrets of magic: misdirection and presentation. As if all this were not MORE than sufficient to recommend the book, it's written in a very witty, eloquent, and entertaining style that makes it a joy to simply read. But wait! There's more! Please find enclosed numerous card effects worthy of the most discriminating audiences at less than the cost of your favorite magic dealer's Trick O' the Day. With regard to my own experience I've read this book near to tatters and have annotated nearly every other page-I got my money's worth and so will you.

Great Selection

You need SOME experience, but you do not need to be an expert as you may think by the title. I recomend buy "Royal Road to Card Magic" and this book together. "Royal Road to Card Magic" gives you some basics and this book will fine tune your skills. It gives you a great variety of slieghts. Take the palm for example, there are 14 versions of it. I can't say enough about this book. If you are even considering card magic, BUY THIS BOOK!
