Though somewhat modest in it's appearance, the book's contents are an important advancement of many of the concepts discussed in the equally important book, How Buildings Learn. I'd been intrigued by this set for years before deciding to hunt it down. My advise is only buy a new copy because the used is often sepearted from the actual cards. There are also two editions it seems, one in paperback and the other hard bound.

The book itself is very readable. Slightly less than 1/4 of it goes over history, symbolism, and the basics of a reading (i.e. the card spread). Each card is given a page of description/meaning often with a note regarding added meanings should it come up in a spread that it naturally aligns with in meanings. The last quarter of the book covers a dozen of real readings. Each case goes over the querrents questions and how the placement of cards combines for more in depth gleening.

I'm not sure if anyone can say enough about the lovely cards. They are rather small compared to other divination deck, but obviously larger than a mah jongg tile. About 3.5 by 1.75 inches (9 by 4.5 if you use metric). The card stock has been treated with a very light surfacting to aid in their handling. The only thing that one could wish for is that the card stock had been heavier, thicker. I worry about how wear and tear will affect them over time. Once you stack the cards in a deck, it's nearly as tall as the cards are wide since there are 144 of them.

And I simply love the illustration! They are so evocative of the cards name, such as duck, carp, tortoise, willow. They do not depart from what you expect of age chinese art, either in the landscapes, trees, or people garbed in historical wear. All the flavor of china is there. A small key is on the right of every card with thier number, the original tile, the chinese character, and page number if you need to check the book. There are 3 blank cards included as well for creating a replacement if a couple get lost.

If you have any interest (be it curiosity or your interest in divination) you should order now that you've found it. Otherwise you will be like me and regret missing the chance and hunting it down at a later date

One of the Best Divination Systems, Enhanced with Beautiful Cards

The cards for this set are gorgeous. It was reprinted in 2011 and can't be found at a reasonable price, but is in a new print for very little as a mini Book-in-a-Box(ISBN-13: 9781607103905). The book for that set is tiny and hard to use, so buying an older book separately is well worth a few dollars.

There is an earlier book recommended at the back of the hardcover version called Fortune Telling By Mah Jongg from 1987(ISBN-13: 978-0850305715). This book is much more detailed and describes the meaning of the cards in each position. It is an essential text for those who like this system, as it is much more in depth. It was written before the cards were illustrated for use with Mah Jongg tiles. Some of the meanings are more difficult, and there is extensive information on combinations.

Beautiful cards, outstanding system, and reliable information from Derek Walters. As the years pass many systems become simplified for the mass market. Get the 1987 book for a real gem, and the cards for the great artwork. Accessible to those without a prior experience in Chinese metaphysics, and of great use value to those with roots or interests in it.

I cannot recommend this system highly enough.

I have been looking for these cards for 8 years. I never knew the name of them until today! I used to go to an amazing psychic in North Yorkshire, England who read exclusively with these cards, and her readings were the most accurate of any that I ever had. She didn't know the name of them, and I've wanted them ever since!
I no longer live in the UK, and have missed those readings - now I can learn them for myself!
These are a must have for anyone interested in oracles or tarot...I am really excited that I've finally found them!

Using this book in my college class

This book is being used in my Intro to Geography class. It is a softcover book, that is fairly easy to read, and has lots of beautiful looking full color pictures and maps. The only drawback for me is the price of the text, since it is a brand new edition, and I could not find any used copies.

I received this textbook in very good condition. The textbook I received was a loose leaf textbook which I put into a binder for class. This textbook was a requirement for one of my classes in Student Affairs. The textbook itself is easy to read and provides many examples based on the theories.
