Great reference for non-developers!

Perfect for those of us who only want just the facts without all the fluff! I keep it on my shelf at work and it's a great resource when I'm working with SharePoint 2013 search and the corresponding web parts. Easy to understand and the examples are down-to-earth and written clearly.

Excellent content, although as the author states it is almost straight from his blog. Why 3 stars? Lousy formatting and no index. Every printed technical book should have a good index. The index may be less of a problem with the Kindle edition where you can do a search.

About the Author
Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, LJ Ross graduated from King's College London with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Law and continued her studies in Paris and Florence. After working in the City as a regulatory lawyer for a number of years, she realised it was high time for a change. The catalyst was the birth of her son, which forced her to take a break from the legal world and find time for some of the detective stories which had been percolating for a while and finally demanded to be written. She lives with her husband and young son in the south of England, but will always be a northern girl at heart. Yet another sequel

This could be a good series IF each book finished the story. Instead, Sycamore Gap was the sequel to Holy Island and the reader is still guessing who some of the bad guys are? A sequel to this book is in the works.

The plot is somewhat far fetched, about a large band of pagans hiding in plain sight in the local area. Here it is 6 months after the murders on Holy Island and Ryan doesn't seem to have solved any other cases. All the members of the Circle should have been arrested in Holy Island, and Ryan should have had another case to solve in Sycamore Gap.

One thing which made no sense at all was that Ryan's girlfriend was allowed to be in the incident room when the detectives and CSI were working on the case. No way would any civilian be allowed that freedom, and later be left alone with all the evidence while the police went chasing after a suspect. With so many pagans living close by it might be possible for Anna to be one of the members of the Circle, and she would be privy to all the evidence the police were collecting about them. It just didn't make sense.

I will not be buying the next book. The search for the Pagan leader has already gone on way too long.

Dark and Intense! DCI

What do the centuries old Hadrian’s Wall, Circle of Satanic worshipers, a serial killer, and DCI Maxwell Ryan have in common? Much more than one might think. LJ Ross has woven another dark, intense mystery involving Ryan and his colleague, Frank Phillips, as they attempt to unravel the interlocking puzzles of two murders: The skeleton of a young woman is found hidden within the old Roman wall; apparently it has been interred there for ten years. Soon thereafter, another young woman’s body is found in the same spot. The crimes seem to be related, but can they possibly be work of the same man?

It is the Summer Solstice. The Circle that was responsible for the deaths on Holy Island, Ryan’s previous case, has been disbanded, according to police officials. What Ryan and his team are seeing now has them wondering. My brain screamed, “Not again!” I enjoyed Holy Island a great deal, but I felt that a second book filled with secret members and sacrificial victims would be over the top. Much to my relief, most of the plot focused on other characters with motives even more malevolent, if that is possible. Ms. Ross has once again conjured up some wicked people; some are bad to the bone, while several others are quite skilled at masking their true selves, and they appear to function as normal human beings. One, in particular, had me completely fooled.

The good guys are more balanced in their personalities. They have genuine feelings, they have relationships, and they work hard, not for power and prestige, but because they want to make the world better and safer. As in Holy Island, Ryan and Anna continue their romance; Phillips, too, has been bitten by the love bug, and I couldn’t help rooting for him. There are some smatterings of humor along the way also.

It was easy to become immersed in this second book. I think I liked it even better than the first. Is everything resolved in the end? Regrettably, no. Questions are left unanswered and some crimes go unpunished. This leaves the door open for a third novel. I am not sure that I can handle more than three books in this vein, since for me, it really pushes the bounds of believability. Three and out for the Circle would be my preference. However, I do enjoy Ryan and Anna, Phillips, and Denise MacKenzie. I would like to see them investigating other sorts of crimes not related to the occult. Ms. Ross writes a suspense-filled plot and likable, as well as loath-able, characters, so I do look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Stories should have a begining, a middle and an ending. This one had a tolerable begining, an interesting middle and then she just stopped. It may have been a tawdry attempt to interest readers in her next book. But for me I felt as though the contract between author and reader had been seriously broken and I would not invest time and effort in any of her other books.

Back to the Drawing Board

I was greatly looking forward to what sounded like a unique and modern approach to an ancient way. However, within the first few minutes of reading I came across what I can only call unforgivable typos. When a writer and/or their proofer and editor do not know the difference between weather/whether, or lightning/lightening, and allow such serious errors to be published in a book that's asked to be taken seriously, it does not bode well. There were also "normal" typos of misspelling. As I tried to give the material the benefit of the doubt, I realized I was bracing myself for the next blunder and increasingly losing my concentration and attention to the actual content.
It is with disappointment that I can only give this 3 stars because I couldn't proceed any further to truly explore its contents.

If Harry Potter and the Cursed Child disappointed you and has you worried about plunking down your hard-earned cash for another book, worry not. This is J K Rowling in her element. Outstanding.

Quick Overview

This collection is an interesting read dedicated to the intrigue relating to Harry Potter’s world. A terrific read that will have fans scrambling for more.

Length: Print, 63 pages.

Q - Target Audience/Genre and is it marketed as Nonfiction or Fiction:
A – Fans of Harry Potter and fantasy.

Q - How was this book obtained?
A – Purchased on Amazon during pre-order stage.

Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Not really, but I doubt any buyer would be purchasing this without having purchased every Potter book written.

Q – If this is a recurring character or a series, does it have a cliffhanger ending?
A – No cliffhanger ending. These bits and pieces help fill the gaps for fans of harry Potter. Another reviewer states that these all, except for one, are available on the internet. I personally am the sort that would rather have the stories in Kindle.

Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.

Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – Very quick, easy read.

Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – Plain English, with no profanities.

Q – What age group is this suitable for?
A – Young Adult and older, but it also is a terrific book parents can read aloud to their youngsters.

Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – No complaints here. These bits and pieces are of special interest to Harry Potter devotees, but will interest many others, such as me.

Azkaban has existed since the fifteenth century and was not originally a prison at all. The island in the North Sea upon which the first fortress was built never appeared on any map, Muggle or wizarding, and is believed to have been created, or enlarged, by magical means.

The fortress upon it was originally home to a little-known sorcerer who called himself Ekrizdis. Evidently extremely powerful, but of unknown nationality, Ekrizdis, who is believed to have been insane, was a practitioner of the worst kinds of Dark Arts. Alone in the middle of the ocean, he lured, tortured and killed Muggle sailors, apparently for pleasure, and only when he died, and the concealment charms he had cast faded away, did the Ministry of Magic realise that either island or building existed. Those who entered to investigate refused afterwards to talk of what they had found inside, but the least frightening part of it was that the place was infested with Dementors.

Many in authority thought Azkaban an evil place that was best destroyed. Others were afraid of what might happen to the Dementors infesting the building if they deprived them of their home. The creatures were already strong and impossible to kill; many feared a horrible revenge if they took away a habitat where they appeared to thrive. The very walls of the building seemed steeped in misery and pain, and the Dementors were determined to cling to it. Experts who had studied buildings built with and around Dark magic contended that Azkaban might wreak…’

Misnamed and poor collection

I am a long-standing Potter fan but this book was a disappointment. First of all, the subtitle is a misnomer. These are no short stories; these are profiles and short biographies of Hogwarts characters. What Rowling seems to be doing: She gives readers a glance into her thoughts about the background of mostly minor characters. The result is not very surprising; something like that we could have surmised. I must admit, I don't kbow what's the use of this. I can imagine that some people are interested in this background information but why call it short stories? Maybe so that more people buy it? I am sad that a genial tale like "Harry Potter" is now exploited for the last scraps of money that can be extracted from it. And, Rowling did not even put any efforts into the language: From the novels we know her skills of expression. These texts are weak, use repetitive vocabulary and to me they just seem to be spoils falling from the wonderfully bountiful table of the original novels.

I thought the book had it all-suspense, romance, and history. I learned a lot about Armenian genocide but I also felt victims of other genocides could relate to this story.

The novel starts in 1990 with Orhan's grandfather, Kemal’s, death in 1990. Orhan learns that his grandfather has left the family house to some unknown older woman who is living in a nursing home in California. Orhan goes to California to meet this woman and to buy the family house back from her.

The woman then tell Orhan the story about his grandfather and his relationship with her family which was Armenian and living in Turkey. The story goes back to 1914 when Kemal was a teenager and was working for this Armenian family who falls victim to the Armenian genocide in Turkey.

The novel tries very hard not to vilify the Turks (which is hard to do if your family was a victim of genocide). The novel does an excellent job of describing difficulties in relationships among groups that are separated by the three factors of religion, social class and ethnic groups.

I found the novel very easy to read despite its describing a very sad chapter in history. For readers who like romance there is a love story. In short I found this book not only informative but a real page turner.

Do yourself a favor; read this book. It will transform you.

As a First Read winner of "Orhan's Inheritance", I must disclose that I received this particularly wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

I have been reviewing books from Goodreads for a little over a year, and most of the ones I received have been ones that I have rated well but this one goes way over the top. If I could have given it more than five stars I would have. This kind of book doesn't come around as often as it should. The storyline; compelling, the characters;masterpieces, the history; fascinating and the language; pure poetry. Congratulations, Aline, for creating such an outstanding book for all to read. And a first novel at that! There will be a lot of us waiting for your next story.

This book starts out with some amazing quotes and I love quotes. I attach them to many of the photographs I take and so, early on in the story, I started jotting down all the quotes that I was particularly interested in and by the end of the book, I had filled the entire inside of the cover jacket with quotes. Of course, it didn't hurt any that the very first paragraph has the reader saying, "What the heck...?", which sends us off into a world that few people really know about and a journey into the mind and soul of a people who are in a world quite different from ours. Yet...the language suggests that we can all be influenced by the Turkish proverbs that abound in Aline's novel.

In so many ways this novel touched my own photographic soul. Art is an integral component of all of our cultures. Humans strive to tell stories, whether it is in the form of petroglyphs, oral storytelling, paintings, textiles, architecture, sculpture, motion pictures or words in books. Art is always under attack in some form or another. Orhan was incarcerated for his art which was seen as a form of rebellion. He put his art "away" and in the end brought it back out into the light to tell the story of his people. Ohanesian's book is just that; a work of art in the form of words that tells the story of her people. I am so glad to have been a winner of this important novel.

Beautifully crafted story, start to finish!

An amazing story full of beautifully crafted characters in a truly universal theme-love, loss and survival during a time of political unrest and incredible hardship. The author writes with such emotion and grace. Her imagery and symbolism ring true for all human beings. I simply couldn't put this book down!!

A inside look, well-written and about the greatest baseball story of the last century

This book is the real deal inside-story. Verducci was there through it all, he clearly did thorough interviews and research with everyone involved after the fact, and he sets up the time to tell his story the way he wants to. There are so many details here it's beautifully hard to take it all in, and as a Cubs fan, it still feels unreal.

It is not a great work of literature, but there is some pretty writing. It is also, first and foremost, about the team and the Cubs organization - there are no fan interviews, no attempts to situate the incredible 2016 season in the broader cultural context of that crazy year. The story, and the people in it, exist in isolation. But it is a beautiful story about good people, and for any baseball fan, a well-written dive into the best baseball story of the last century. Highly recommended for a Cubs fan, recommended for a baseball fan, and enjoyable enough for anyone else.

Great Book...Period

Outstanding book. The format goes back and forth between the World Series and chapters on different pieces of the Cub plan for changing their culture and winning a World Series. I work in the Sport Psychology field and have a background in baseball so learning about the Cub culture is what drew me to the book. The inside access is phenomenal, and I found myself saying multiple times throughout, "Man, I can't believe they let him print that." If you have interest in the inner workings of professional baseball, this is a book for you. If you have interest in culture-building, this is a book for you. If you just like the Cubs or baseball, this is a book for you. It's right up there with a book called Legacy for me. Loved it!

From a sports bar in Chicago to the dugout of Progressive field.

This book transported me from the electric atmosphere of a Chicago sports bar where I was watching with anticipation and anxiety during the World Series to the dugout and clubhouse of Wrigley and Progressive fields. It was as though I had jumped through the TV screen and was with the team as they traveled and played throughout the postseason. Tom Verducci did an incredible job helping you to not only relive the greatest World series in baseball history but he brought you along on the journey of rebuilding one of the worst performing, yet most loved, franchises in Major League Baseball. You will end the book feeling like you are part of the Cubs family as you get to know the pillars of the team such as Rizzo, Bryant, Schwarber, and Russell. Verducci brings together the perfect balance of baseball statistics and personal story in such a way that both are engaging and exciting. This book will have you flipping pages with sweaty palms as you relive the anxiety and excitement of the 2016 World Series.
