A great book
By Be the Change You Wish to See
This is a great book. I used it when I was in residency. I am now a practicing psychiatrist. I can still, even to this day, see how this book has shaped my clinical interviewing in a positive way. It is practical, it takes the theory and gives you examples of how to phrase things. It has mneumonics that help you remember all of the different parts of the interview. it enables you to do a pretty complete diagnositic interview when you need to. I remember getting compliments from my supervisors after they observed my interview when I started using these methods. It is a great book to get when you are wondering about how to get started when you first begin conducting interviews.

as a seasoned clinician I would recommend this book to any psychologist, social worker or therapist. When one works in a fast pace like a psych emergency room this book does comes handy.

Open-Hearted Living at its best

I read this book because my life is so full of uncertainty and change right now. I am unemployed, and the anxiety of not being able to pay the rent, the car loan, the bills is incredibly stressful. Pema's words do not allow me to escape the essential problems of my life, but to find the courage to act without the overwhelming sense of fear. Her words are like a soothing balm. Instead of just fear, she has helped me to see that I can take this as a time of deep spiritual growth - in a very real, honest way. I will read this book over and over again.

Embracing life simply as it is

A distinctive compilation on the beauty of continuous change in everyday life, Pema Ch�dr�n - once again - clearly and effortlessly shows her reader how to live a committed life within the present moment. Ch�dr�n displays this approach to life by providing an educational framework concerning three forms of commitment. These "Three Commitments" entail embracing the fundamental groundlessness or impermanence in life, and the prevention of intentional harm to oneself and others; taking on the courage and responsibility to embrace others as oneself; and embracing the world just as it is. Through this framework, Ch�dr�n provides her reader with the tools to progressively see the underlying stories that construct the ego, which - in turn - allow the mind's clouds (i.e. thought and emotion) to gradually dissipate, and eventually leave a clear mind of unconditional, non-judgmental, self-acceptance. With this clearing mind in progress, one is free to live beautifully with endless change and embrace life simply as it is.

Living by the Three Vows -- Challenging, Fulfilling, and Not Impossible

Using as the basis of this book the idea that all of our suffering comes from our fear of uncertainty, Chodron presents her path to freedom from this suffering. She presents the notion of "living by vows." Now, we're not talking head-shaved monastery living. Nor the drop-out (if enlightened) approach of I Walked to the Moon and Almost Everybody Waved. No, this book is for spiritual people committed to living in the modern, secular world. It's for laypeople. So these are meant more as guideposts than strict practices.

The three vows are:
- Pratimoksha. Commitment to personal liberation and doing no harm.
- Bodhisattva. Selfless service and alleviation of the suffering of others.
- Samaya. Accept reality as it is -- "awakened energy."

If this sounds intriguing, provocative, or helpful to you, I recommend this book.

---7/19/13 Edit/Addition: I'm just about done reading Extraordinary Zen Masters: A Maverick, a Master of Masters, and a Wandering Poet and finding it a subtly inspiring book. I highly recommend it for anyone on the Buddhist or spiritual path. It won't wow you at first, but it grew on me as I appreciated it's quiet--bumps and all--interesting profiles of three historically important Zen masters.

Repeat Read and a Must Own for Sci-Fi Fans

I just finished re-reading this book for I think my 10th time. It hasn't lost it's flavor over the years, and I enjoy it more each time I pick it up - sorta like going back for your favorite flavor of ice cream time and again, providing much the same enjoyment that a good vanilla/strawberry fix provides.

SYNOPSIS:
Psion is about a street kid who is half alien. His alien half provided him with the ability to read minds, but he is helpless to use the talent. Some trauma so deeply hurt him that he is incapable of using his psychic abilities. Cat is taken to this institute where government agents try to put humpty back together and 'fix' his mind reading abilities. He befriends a fellow mind reader Dere and falls for a sweet girl Jule, a teleport who is the only person who believes Cat is not worthless. Jule believes Cat can help the government mind readers stop an infamous terrorist/mind reader/teleporter/telekenesis multi-talented 'Quicksilver' from taking over the FTA mines.

Cat gets kicked out of the institute and sold into a slavery into the very mines that Quicksilver wants to overtake. The Cinder mines are haunted by an alien race of teleporting mind reading Hydrans. Cat is half Hydran and quickly becomes their 'key' to ending the humans reign on Cinder. Hydrans are helpless and cannot hurt or kill anyone without feeling the effects mirrored back at them.

Cat is essentially a spy in a nest of mind readers, so he walks a fine and frighting line, as he and his small group try to thwart Quicksilver and his revolutionaries.

What I love about it:
The characters are portrayed in such a complex manner. The book is in first person format and you know and feel everything Cat does, the good the bad and the ugly.

Negatives:
I still want to know if Seibling is Cat's father. That question is never answered in any of the Cat books. Ever hear of DNA tests?

SPOILER:
The final confronation scene on Cinder is confusing. The knowledge that Seibling forces Cat through a 3 way joining to kill isn't obvious from the scene. The recap helps the reader to understand exactly what happened.

This book is on my top 10 sci-fi books of all time. I love it. 'nough said.

I have actually read this book probably 20 times. I read the sequel to it, Catspaw, first, which I HIGHLY recommend. After reading that I had to have Psion, the first book , because I wanted to know more about this character. I had to special order Psion because it was difficult to find in print at the time. I purchased this kindle version so that I would always have it available.

Joan Vinge is one of my favorite authors, and her "Cat" series are my favorites of her books. Great plots, fantastic characters. The Kindle versions are especially great because you get extra stuff, like the novella "Psiren" which is included in this version of Psion.

Helpful stuff, but not user friendly

The best thing about this book is its attempt to systematize the difficult and too-often mysticised craft of cross-examination. The worst thing about it is that the authors did not apply the level of thinking that they advocate for cross-examination to the design and content of the book, which is poorly organized, diffuse, and a general nuisance to deal with because of its pervasive shapelessness. It's well worth dealing with the demands of the book because it is the best thought-out discussion of cross-examination in print. ...if you can figure out what the authors are trying to say about how to organize a cross and get through their Rube Goldberg "system" of chapters and rules and topic cards and sequence-of-events charts and page preparations -- I eventually gave up on their explanations and started outlining the book in my own way, upon which the sloppy, ill-considered form stopped mattering and the book's powerful insights into the whole process became comprehensible. Ultimately, examining witnesses at trial is about understanding, eliciting, and explaining facts to people who have to decide where truth lies (so to speak). The authors here give more information about how to do this in more ways than anyone else. If you want to "get" what's in this book, you will have to work hard and deal with stupid obstacles to learning and recurrent barriers to clear communication. Get over it. That's a large part about what getting ready to deal with witnesses at trial is all about anyway. Might as well get the practice in a safe environment. The book seems to be written from the perspective of a primarily criminal-law oriented practice in a jurisidiction in which the lawyers have access to basically all the information that will be presented at trial. To me, a civil practice New York lawyer, that seems about as real as the Star Wars movies, but there's still a lot of value here. If you are new to this area of the law, this book is the best way to get a sense of what you can do with cross (at least until I write my book on the subject :-)) If you are experienced, it will give you ways to fine-tune your knowledge and skills. Either way, it will give you good training in patience and delayed gratification -- essential skills for a trial lawyer. If I got to break my rating down, I would give the book a (generous) two stars for accessibilty and a (conservative) five stars for concepts and information.

A text full of inspiration

This is my favorite book. Ever. And I'm an English teacher. I ordered it again to give to a student who was so struck by Rumi's poems when she borrowed my copy that she didn't give it back for months, and only reluctantly. I know there is a lot of criticism of Coleman Barks's translation, but I ONLY like his translations of Rumi. I've picked up other translators' work and just haven't felt the same love. Maybe that means I wouldn't actually like Rumi (although I've considered learning Persian just to find out), or maybe it's just that Barks brings alive the mystical quality, the opening to the universe, that--for me--characterizes Rumi's work and draws me to him. I first read this book in an ashram in India while conducting field work in college, and spent the better part of that day frantically scribbling quotations into a tattered notebook, only to later hunt down the book and buy my own copy when I returned home. That was almost 20 years ago, but my feeling of... connection... with the text has never gone away. I find that each time I open it, a different set of lines will speak to me, depending on my personal experience at the time; I can always find in this text exactly what I need to hear to re-inspire my sense of wonder at the universe.. I'm not Muslim myself, but I feel his vision of the world transcends such categories. In fact, that transcendence is the essence of Rumi, and Barks interprets that perfectly for me.

Outstanding Mystical Poetry

As one involved in meditation as a path to enlightenment and quite well read in the subject I greatly enjoyed this
volume of Rumi's poetry. As poetry on its own it stands head and shoulders above most poetry written in the English language. That is saying a lot as English has produced some magnificent works both historically and
contemporarily. Rumi can easily be compared to Shakespeare in quality although their subject matter was quite different. Shakespeare of course dealt with egoic human nature while Rumi is more concerned with the mystical Spirit of all things. For the uninitiated some of the symbolism may take a while to understand but I think anyone who is considering this volume would be acquainted with such symbols as a door or a window or even the capital "K" King, or Friend as compared to friend. Although Rumi is 13th century Muslim many of his references are to the transcendent figures of Christianity. Many Christians may never have thought of the symbolic relationship of Jesus and his donkey but Rumi explains it very succinctly. Christianity of course has its own areas of mystical thought but for the most part have been banned by the Church as heretical simply because they erase the necessity of intermediaries between man and God, ie. the power structure of the priesthood. Look to the Gnostic Writings of the early church to see how similar they are to mystical thinking universally. Some of the words uttered by Jesus
in the Gnostic Gospels might seem quite incomprehensible to our modern, indoctrinated minds. Of course in mystical thought, of which Rumi is a paramount figure, man's approach to God is direct. "The Kingdom of Heaven is Within" and " To know one's Self is to know God " are but two basic examples.

Over and above the mystical thinking exemplified in this volume, it is highly erotic and at times, perhaps mainly to the Western mind, down right hilarious. Imagine a cook's responses to the objections of the chickpea in being boiled in water. The cook's responses turn out to be quite reasonable in themselves, not to mention the spiritual understanding involved.

It is no wonder that Rumi is the most read poet in America today (by children of the '60's?) and it is said that Coleman Bark's translations are much of the reason. I can not comment on that as I have only begun to read the work of other translators and am yet unable to intelligently compare and contrast but I will say that the translations of Coleman Bark have enabled a deep chord to be struck within me by this writer and poet in 13th century Farsi.

I would highly recommend this volume to anyone exploring the Spiritual, as I would also recommend this volume to anyone who either loves poetry itself or thinks of poetry only as something to be taken or left. If you are one of the latter it may introduce you to a whole new view of literary expression. As with most all poetry it does demand time of contemplation to fully grasp its beauty and meaning. Rumi will always occupy of place of importance in my library, non-fiction of course.
