Only got it for a course

I only ordered this book for a course I am taking, but don't find it very useful. It's wordy and not easy to read. There aren't a lot of take-away ideas from the book, so that stinks. However, if you do get this book, I recommend the cheaper unbound version. It just goes in a 3-ring notebook!

About the Author
"I sometimes think it ironic for an ex-seaman, longshoreman, truck driver, policeman, bus driver, etc., to find success writing children's novels," says Brian Jacques (pronounced "Jakes"). Yet it is all too true. With the publication of his first children's book in 1987, the award-winning Redwall, Jacques' fresh talent has received exceptional praise from reviewers in the United States and England. Newbery Award winner Lloyd Alexander called it "a fine work, literate, witty, filled with the excitement of genuine storytelling. Young people will surely be captivated. I hope they give their elders a chance to share the delights."

A well-known radio personality in his native Liverpool--as well as an actor, stand-up comic, and playwright--Brian Jacques is the host of "Jakestown" on BBC Radio Merseyside. Ever the performer, Jacques is well-known for applying his acting and entertainment background to his lively presentations to legions of young fans at schools across the United States and England.

Brian Jacques was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Along with forty percent of the population of Liverpool, his ancestral roots are in Ireland, County Cork to be exact.

He grew up in the area around the Liverpool docks. His interest in adventure stories began at an early age with reading the books of: Daniel Defoe, Sir Henry Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Thomas Malory, Robert Michael Ballantyne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Kenneth Grahame. He attended St. John's School, an inner city school that had its playground on the roof. On his first day at St. John's, at the age of ten, he had an experience that marked his potential as a writer. When given an assignment of writing a story about animals, he wrote about the bird that cleaned a crocodile's teeth. The teacher could not, and would not, believe that a ten year old could write that well. When young Brian refused to falsely say that he had copied the story, he was caned as "a liar". He had always loved to write, but it was only then, that he realized that he had a talent for writing.

Some teachers at St. John's proved to be good role models. As Mr. Jacques recalls:

"My favourite teacher was Mr. Austin Thomas. He looked like Lee Marvin. Big Man. A Captain in World War II. He came to school on a big bush bike with the haversack on back. He was a man's man. Always fair. I was fourteen at the time when Mr. Thomas introduced the class to poetry and Greek literature. (Because of him, I saved seven shillings and sixpence to buy The Iliad and The Odyssey at this dusty used book shop.)"

This interest in poetry extended to Wordsworth, Tennyson, and Goldsmith.It was also at St. John's that Brian met a teacher, Alan Durband (who also taught two Beatles, Paul McCartney and George Harrison), who, more than thirty years later would bring about a major change in his life.

After Brian finished school at fifteen, he set out to find adventure as a merchant seaman. He travelled to many far away ports, including New York, Valparaiso, San Francisco, and Yokohama. Tiring of the lonely life of a sailor, he returned to Liverpool where he worked as a railway fireman, a longshoreman, a long-distance truck driver, a bus driver, a boxer, a bobby (Police Constable 216D), a postmaster, and a stand-up comic.

A Pleasant Surprise!

I reluctantly bought this for a daughter who loves Redwall books and cooking. The first pleasant surprise came upon opening the book and seeing how visually pleasing it is. It's lovely! The next came when our daughter starting working her way through the book, with the goal of making each recipe. She's about half-way through and each one thus far has been delicious; something our whole family enjoyed. Most cookbooks yield a handful of recipes that are keepers but The Redwall Cookbook is amazingly, consistently good. This is a purchase I'm glad I made.

Kids cookbook with a story

This paperback book has beautiful illustrations. The table of contents is divided into months which is a great idea. Kids will love the names of the dishes. They are easy to make and taste good too. They all follow the story line.

Five Stars for the Recipes

I am one of those people who loves cookbooks, yet mostly finds them impenetrable when it comes to using them. So often I buy a cookbook, try a few recipes, then stop after a few duds that aren't worth the work.

I borrowed the Redwall Cookbook first from the library, because my son loves the fiction books. Without any prompting, he planned a menu and made sure we bought the ingredients. I was skeptical.

Now we have tried several recipes and I am smitten. Every single recipe has been a winner: tasty, interesting, healthy. And my son has been enthusiastic about trying them, including lots of new things he'd never been willing to try before like leeks and portabello mushrooms.

I have never read the Redwall Books, so I can't attest to the book's authenticity in relationship to the stories. I can say the recipes are really excellent, and this is a foodie saying this. I can't think of a single cookbook where I have ever been through this many recipes and not found one dud. My son is excited about making and eating the recipes, and feels good about having done so when they turn out so delicious. I am sold.

I think the book is a little pricey for the size (number of recipes)! But it deserves every one of its 5 stars.

Very high quality reference.

I'm a professional engineering geologist in California who is fortunate enough to work with rock slope stability projects. This book, combined with Hoek & Bray's (now Wyllie & Mah's) Rock Slope Engineering, provides me with everything I need for my work. It's an indispensable reference. With California's extremely variable geology and the dwindling supply of flat project sites, I'm regularly hit with new situations. This book has always provided a suitable example and clear explanation of how to solve the problem. I have no formal engineering education, yet I can still follow this book through nearly all of its explanations. I do have 20 years of professional experience working with civil and geotechnical engineers though. Bottom line: This is a great reference for the professional engineering geologist or geotechnical or civil engineer.

Complete rock mechanics book

When I took rock mechanics at Berkeley we used Prof. Goodman's book (of course), but I have found this book to be far more user friendly and complete. Although an understanding of geology and earth processes is essential for the subject to be understandable, this book and the accompanying book of worked problems will teach you the subject well and thoroughly. I just wish they'd make the accompanying book of worked problems in paperback becuase it's too expensive!

O Bread! My Bread!

Let me start with a summary. My Bread is a great cookbook about making artisan bread, thin crust pizza, and sandwiches. The instruction is clear, the recipe is practical and super easy, and the picture is beautiful. You also get a bonus section about the author's personal story in developing his career and famed no-knead method. I love this book and highly recommend it to everyone.

I like bread, especially good quality artisan bread. I like getting my hands dirty, both in the laboratory and in my kitchen. But, as a Taiwanese biologist, I have no cultural background, professional training, or family tradition in making bread, so I didn't even think about doing it before. Until somewhere in 2009, I learned about Jim Lahey's no-knead, slow fermentation, and baking in an oven-within-an-oven method. (Thanks to Mark Bittman for New York Times and Internet!) I just tried it using my Pyrex bowl. The result was a big surprise and very successful! I started making bread regularly. I shared my bread with friends including Americans, a Brazilian, Chinese, and an Italian. They all like it and cannot believe that this bread is not purchased from stores. So, if I, a guy with no cultural background and no family tradition in bread, can use this method to make great artisan bread in his little kitchen, anyone can do it!

Someone has commented that it is a one-trick thing, so if you've known this technique beforehand (like myself), you don't need this book. I DISAGREE. I got this book after I've produced about 30 loafs with experimenting add-in ingredients, but Lahey's book still provides me with good recipe for different bread variations and interesting ideas. I tried several already; I like some better than others, but they all taste pretty good. Not to mention the pizza section he put together. He told you how to handle the dough in a baking sheet, and he taught you how to make pizza that the simple topping comes in balance with the thin, crispy crust. I've made pizza funghi, pizza cipolla, and pizza patate accordingly. Oh, they are so good.

The final two chapters are about "The Art of the Sandwich" and "Stale Bread". In addition to panini recipes, Lahey also included a quite comprehensive coverage of making "homemade sandwich ingredients" (such as roast beef, aioli, pickles, and mustard) from scratch! Doesn't it sound interesting? The last section gives some idea to use leftover bread that is too hard to use as sandwich or snacks. I have not tried any yet. I definitely will try them out when I have time.

I found that Amazon.com has this "customer images" feature on every product page, and here for My Bread it has become a showcase of no-knead bread that people made. Not to repeat the awesome round loaf, I uploaded pictures of three other types of bread/pizza that I made following the recipe from the book: stecca (p.77), pizza bianca and sweet variation (pp.137 and 139), and pizza cipolla (p.134). I hope you can get some idea of what this book can offer.

It's true that there is one major technique, but My Bread is definitely not just a one-trick book. It tells me how to make good bread and pizza. I enjoy My Bread (and my bread) very much. I hope you can also enjoy the same satisfaction of making YOUR bread. This is why I wrote this lengthy comment here.

Great book from a great baker

I prefer bread books written by practicing bakers. I find that they usually reflect author's approach to bread-baking, his philosophy, and in my opinion such books are more complete and entertaining than the ones written by professional food writers, although there are some notable exception. So from that point of view a book by Jim Lahey, owner and founder of New York Sullivan Street Bakery is an obvious choice. There is another reason altogether though - arguably it was Mr. Lahey's recipe for no-knead-bread and publication by Mark Bittman in NY Times that started the resurgence of amateur bread baking. It was his recipe that transformed me from occasional to everyday baker. Therefore for me buying this book was a no brainer.
My first impression is very positive (I don't expect it to change). The book is printed in convenient 10x8" format on a high-quality glossy paper. Most but not all recipes are accompanied by photos, which make the process very clear. The recipes are given in cups and in metric units, a good thing in my opinion, but if you're used to ounces, you're a bit out luck, although quite a few recipes start with 280 g. of flour which is pretty much 10 oz. The layout is very clear, typeface makes it easy to read, there are no gaudy colors, and every recipe can be found in the table of contents.
There are six chapters. First comes highly personal, rather entertaining and mercifully short explanation of how Mr. Lahey became a baker and what bread represents to him. Second chapter is theory, it explains what the ingredients are, and how the process works. Third chapter is where the recipes begin, there's no-knead-bread itself and about dozen of breads based on it as well as some breads based on liquids other than water. Fourth chapter is pizza and focaccia. Brace yourself, you won't find much tomato sauce there and even less cheese. Fifth chapter is called "The Art of the Sandwich" and describes about a score of paninis and gives recipes for most ingredients that go into them - roasts, spreads, marinated vegetables, dressings, they are all there. The last chapter deals with the things you can do with the stale bread.
Sadly there're no sourdough recipes, and many Sullivan Street Bakery staple breads are not in the book, but then again it is not called "Sullivan Street Bakery Bread Book", so I can't fault the author for not including them, no matter how much I'd like them to be there.
So all in all it's an excellent book and highly recommend it. Seasoned baker or beginner, no matter, you will find something there that will make it worth the purchase. And mark my word, in a couple of months everyone and his uncle will have blogged about stecca.

First Time

I have done the bread machine and other quick methods of making bread for years. This is the first time ever that a loaf of bread has come out of my oven, that the taste and texture made me pinch myself. Could not believe that the slice of bread that I was eating came out of my oven. By the way this is also the first time that I have reviewed a cookbook, even though i have bought at least a hundred of them. This book does not have tons of recipes, but focuses on the technique. The descriptions and photos were very helpful. Can't wait to try the couple dozen varieties included within.

Pepys prodigy or a Go Ask Alice con job?

The Basketball Diaries compiles three years in the life of Jim Carroll from the ages of fourteen to seventeen, over the fall of 1963 to the summer of 1966. During this time Carroll was often drugged out on the streets of New York. Carroll, like myself, kept a diary during this time of his life yet unlike him I was not an aspiring basketball star (nor a drug addict). The level of writing coming from a druggie as young as fourteen seemed unbelievably coherent. I could not help but wonder how much editorial help he must have received prior to publication. No clean and sober fourteen-year-old, or seventeen-year-old for that matter, can write as well as Carroll. How can a boy strung out on heroin or zonked on grass, who skipped school so often write so well? We are either dealing with a Pepys prodigy or another Go Ask Alice con job. There is however some credibility to Carroll's teenage writing prowess in that, in spite of his nodded-out altered state, he managed to win a scholarship to a school for gifted students. Still I can't help but wonder about the promise he might have shown if he hadn't wasted his youth on scoring dope.

Carroll's eye for description was succinct and from what I can remember, accurately reflected what adolescent boys pay attention to. I could read whole chunks of diary entries without pause, even the pages without paragraph divisions. He wrote exactly what he was thinking, and to stop midway in order to reread (a habit of mine) would destroy the experience of being inside his drugged mind. The Basketball Diaries was pure stream-of-consciousness writing, and even Jack Kerouac raved about it.

Carroll let his bravado run confidently after a basketball win:

"Anyway, with the other starters out, I get to score all the points and wind up with 42, which felt good because I haven't really been scoring that many lately. I can also see little Most Valuable Player trophies in my head if this keeps up. We won by an awful lot. After the game they gave us free sodas and s*** and all the local people stood in the lobby as we left and patted us on the back and said, 'Nice game, son,' and all, the whole scene strictly out of 'Leave it to Beaver,' all the old men Fred MacMurray types in tweed suits and the women, a pack of poodle walkers, standing around with a lot of make-up and sort of thinking how cute we were. They had these teased up bleached hair-dos that reminded me exactly of the higher priced 14th St. whores. I wanted to ask one if she wanted to s*** it off but we just hopped into the car for that b**** trip downtown. It's a Friday night and we all wanted to go to the East River Park and get drunk, do reefer and sniff glue. And that's exactly what we did."

There are many hilarious episodes like this in the Diaries, those which are linked to drug culture and Carroll's junkie lifestyle being the funniest. I was laughing out loud as he and some teammates were presented with the serious dilemma of selecting which one of two pills to take before a game. The matter was indeed crucial to the team's performance, because one of the pills was an upper and the other a downer, and no one could remember which was which. They ended up picking a pill at random and the story wouldn't have been funny if they had chosen the upper. You will read how the players s-l-o-w-e-d down as the game went on and missed even the simplest passes and setups.

Another diary entry had me tittering during my lunch hour when Carroll called the cops on a birthday party for his neighbour's four-year-old daughter. An act of revenge for the neighbour calling the police on a noise complaint at Carroll's, he had the last laugh when cops strode up to the door, scaring the daylights out of the tots and ruining their happy scene.

Carroll captured some episodes from 1960's history, such as the latest Dylan releases and the great Northeast blackout of 9 November 1965. I was surprised that there was not one mention of the Beatles, since Carroll was in New York at the time of the Beatles' American arrival in February 1964.

It is the perceptive eye with a humorous twist that Carroll has for detail that struck me the most. Again, I wonder how one so strung out on dope could be alert enough to recall what he had seen--because there isn't a chance that he could have written these diaries while high as a kite. So I have my doubts about the diaries' authenticity. The next passage was hilarious, and while void of drug references, increases its veracity:

"My Marxist pal, Bunty, from my new school, finally talked me into going to one of his Communist Party meetings today. It was in this sleazy place on 11th St called Webster Hall. All the girls looked like reformed Mary Magdalenes. Everyone moans a lot and plays folk songs, one of the requirements seems to be that you have to be ugly. I was wearing my seediest clothes and I still came off looking like Arnold Palmer or something. I dig these m***********s, but the speeches bored the s*** out of me. I went home and told my old man how the government suppresses the proletariat from his due. 'I am the proletariat, you dumb bas***d,' he said, 'and I think those m***********s are off their rockers. Now get the hell inside and do your homework.'"

I liked the imagery at the end of the next passage. I will never think of wedding cake in the same way again:

"Who did I run into today but old Ju-Ju Johnson, fattest junkie I know, could hide a complete set of works, a cooker and innumerable bags of dope in the layers of fat that flop one by one down towards his belt like a drenched wedding cake."

By the time he was seventeen, Carroll was a junkie, selling himself, thieving and committing armed robbery to get money to buy drugs. He described himself as a starving walking skeleton who had no function in life other than to score. That is how his diaries end, abruptly, with the cry of an addict who is so sick of the game:

"I got to go in and puke. I just want to be pure..."

Excellent book on classical dynamics : A Dynamicist from MA

I refer to the 1970 edition.
This is a pleasure reading for the analytically oriented reader.
It is about classical dynamics, some basic non-linear dynamics and no modern coordinates-free approach. It is from 1970 so naturally it is not about Multi-Body dynamics. The attitude rotation is restricted to Euler angles and the book doesn't mention Quaternion and other attitude representations. However, it is one of the best books on the subject of particles and rigid body dynamics. Moreover, there are excellent chapters on celestial mechanics and on spacecraft dynamics. The chapter on celestial mechanics is self contained, comprehensive and it is written as an integral part of analytical dynamics. It includes Lagrange's planetary equations, the restricted three body problem and the gravitational potential both in spherical harmonics and in inertia integrals. One can get a good theoretical background on this subject by reading only this book. There is a chapter on classical perturbation theory with demonstrations of the main methods and a chapter on Hamiltonian transformation theory. There is even a nice derivation of Floquet theory for system with periodic coefficient and a derivation of the Lagrangian in quasi-coordinates. In short, this book is a treasure, written meticulously and humbly. One reviewer wrote that the book chapters were taken from other books, as Goldstein. It is half true; almost every classical dynamics book written during last 80 years used previous works (the same for Goldstein). But some material, like gravitational inertia integrals and satellite stability using Hamiltonian is original contribution. Meirovitch is definitely not Poincar� and even not Whittaker, but he did an excellent job in editing, presenting and explaining the material.

An advanced book

The book is advanced and gives you good insight into the dynamic problems. I would also recommend "Principles and Techniques of Vibrations" by the same author.

Thorough, Complete

Great book written in a concise style. The general methods on how to go about analyzing a problem have been given in rigorous detail. The use of tensor and vector notations make the derivations very general, which is nice. This book is a step up in difficulty level from Taylor's book (which is pretty wordy and covers less breadth despite its size - good beginner's book though) and should be use to gain a very thorough physical and mathematical understanding of the subject. Cons: Like most textbooks, its solved problems are pretty easy, so you may struggle a bit with the unsolved exercises.
